For the second time this season, the Weiser Wolverine boys’ basketball team has defeated the Parma Panthers. The team traveled to Parma on Wednesday, Feb. 7 where they were able to maintain their lead in a close match winning 63 to 52.
Parma won the tip, but after a Panther turnover, Weiser quickly converted it to points as Carter Jensen found Josh Mizar for a 22-foot 3-pointer near the top.
It would be almost 3 minutes until Weiser would score again. After an almost lost ball in offense, Mizar secured it and passed the ball to Jensen on the wing for another 3.
At the 4-minute mark, the game was tied at 6 all after Parma made a shot in the key that rolled up and over the rim.
The teams traded the lead multiple times in the first. With 2:30 to go, Mizar followed his shot and got his own rebound. After securing the ball he kicked it out to Jensen who was waiting beyond the arc for a crowd pleasing 3.
Weiser’s final bucket of the quarter came with 30 seconds to go, when Mizar about 23 feet out, squared up and hit a nothing-but-net 3-pointer.
At the end of the first quarter, it was a tight game with Weiser leading by 1 point, 14 to 13.
Just over a minute into the second, Jensen in the corner hit yet another 3 for Weiser, after a pass from Kolin Cook at the top. Parma answered with a 3 on their next possession.
A couple of minutes later, Weiser scored again when Cook stole the ball taking it coast to coast for a contested lay-in and giving the Wolverines a 7-point lead, 23 to 16.
Before the end of the half, Weiser went up by 10, their largest lead of the night after Jensen made his fourth 3-pointer. Less than a minute later, Braden Phillips working hard inside secured a rebound and put it back up for a bucket.
As the teams went into the locker room the Wolverines held an 8-point lead, up 30 to 22.
Thirty seconds into the third, Mizar found Phillips open on the block for Weiser’s first points of the second half.
Jack Shirts had a rebound put back a couple of minutes later. It’d be about two and a half minutes before the Wolverines would score again as Shirts picked up another rebound put back.
Mizar drained a deep 3-pointer for Weiser right before the buzzer sounded ending the third quarter.
At the end of the third quarter, it was Weiser 46, Parma 37.
The Panthers started with the ball in the fourth quarter and scored a deep 3-pointer. In just over a minute, Parma reduced Weiser’s lead to 5 points. The score remained the same for a few minutes until the Wolverines made a crucial basket by Mizar, which helped to get the game going again for Weiser.
Midway into the fourth both teams went on scoring runs, where Weiser quickly added a steal and a bucket from Cook, another deep 3-pointer from Mizar, and then a lay-in from Shirts. With 3 minutes remaining, it was Weiser 56, Parma 48.
With some back-and-forth action with about a minute to go in the game, it was a 6-point game, 58 to 52.
The Panthers wouldn’t score again, as the Wolverines added a press break lay-in from Cook and then free throws from Jensen and Philips.
In the final quarter, the spread stayed close to the same and Weiser came away with the 63 to 52 victory.
Mizar was the leading scorer for Weiser with 20 points. Jensen had a solid first half where he made four 3-pointers, and he ended the game with 14 points. Cook had 13 points, Shirts had 11, and Phillips with 5.
