Last Friday on Aug. 30, the Weiser cross country team participated in the Weiser cross country invite with the boys getting fourth place overall and the girls getting eighth.
Cross country though sadly not a sport that gets the recognition it deserves, had a great start to their season this year getting first in their last meet for both boys and girls and their win streak has continued into their second meet of the season which took place right here in Weiser.
The meet was hosted at the Rolling Hills Golf Course and that name is no lie. The course had the racers run 2.5 laps around a hilly golf course. This course is not the easiest course by a long shot but despite this, Weiser still did extremely well.
There were a total of 18 teams competing on the high school boy level and our boy’s team placed fourth out of all of them and our girls placed eighth out of 12 teams.
In total, 205 athletes participated in the entire event for boys, 10 of whom were from Weiser, and 117 athletes for girls, five of whom were from Weiser.
The top five runners for our boy’s team were Blake Quinton with a time of 17:10:08 placing second overall, Judah Parsons with a time of 17:44:50 placing eighth overall, Josh Kelley with a time of 18:19:12 placing 17th overall, Alex Woods with a time of 19:39:19 placing 52nd overall, and Ammon Anderson with a time 19:47:11 placing 55th overall.
When asked about how they felt about the meet, Woods lamented that the race was tough, but he powered through the tough trials he had to face.
“It was a tough race, but despite that, I pushed through!” Woods said.
For the girls our top three runners were Claire Matthews with a time of 21:14:35 placing fifth overall, Corianna Parsons with a time of 21:44:66 placing sixth overall, and Kenzie Strasser with a time of 27:59:71 placing 73rd overall.
When asked about the meet, Parsons mentioned how she was happy she PR’d and how the last stretch was mainly endurance for her.
“I did well with this race, I PR’d from last year which was amazing. The thing about this course is that the last stretch is all about endurance so you just have to do your best and go,” Parsons said.
When asking the coach, Scott Hale, about how the meet went, he lamented about the smoke conditions but otherwise was happy about the performance of his team and was excited for the rest of the season.
“The smoke did come in during the High school boys’ race but other than that the conditions were great and all of our runners put their best effort forward despite this difficult course,” Hale said.
The next meet for the high school cross country team will be Sept. 5 in Caldwell Idaho. Let’s hope both teams can perform even better than they did for this one and make Weiser proud!
