Weiser cross-country girls ranked number 1

The Weiser High School cross country team welcomed 10 schools from Idaho and Oregon during the Weiser Invitational held Thursday, Sept. 2 at Rolling Hills Golf Course.
Wolverine runners competed well, according to Coach Scott Hale who said he had a great time hosting so many different teams for a large race.
A few runners earned personal best times on the notoriously difficult course, which consists of hills, a grassy path, and the heat of summer, all factors that push athletes to their limits.
“It’s always one of the most difficult races all year,” Hale commented.
Junior Kylee Quinton won the girl’s race with a time of 20:51. Sophomore Brooklyn Daley of Melba took second place, with a time of 22:12; and Weiser sophomore Kendall Rynearson finished in third place, with a time of 22:32.
Freshman Kailee Lerew took eighth place with a time of 23:14. Senior Libbie Rynearson took 20th, with a time of 25:35; and senior Kiearra Hoobery finished 30th with a time of 27:30.
While Weiser did take the first and third place spot, Melba had more runners finish in the top 10 with a smaller spread between their first and last runner.
Weiser finished the meet in second place as a team.
The boys’ 5K competition was tough, with Taylor Fox from Union finishing in the top spot, with a time of 17:47. All five Union runners finished in the top 15, earning Union the first place team finish.
Senior, Colyer Chandler, topped the Wolverine runners, finishing in 21:28. Colton Foster also ran well, with a time of 21:38. Charlie Woods finished in 22:53, with Eli Woods finishing in 23:22. Aaron Despain was Weiser’s fifth runner, with a time of 24:05.
Weiser finished seventh as a team.
Currently, the girls’ team is ranked number 1 in the district, with the boys team occupying the number 4 spot among six teams.
“It sounds cliché, but the whole team is stepping up,” Hale said. “I’ve made this year’s practices a little bit more intense than in years past and they are all stepping up to the challenge. If I had to single out just a couple athletes, Kylee (Quinton) and Kailee (Lerew), who are new to the team, have acclimated very quickly and have added to our team’s energy, dedication, and confidence.”
Hale said both his boys’ and girls’ teams could be challengers at district and state meets.
“Of course, anything can happen between now and the end of the season, but the girls have done amazing and have shown strong promise of competing for the top spot at district,” he said. “Our boys have shown the willingness to work and improve, and should be ready to fight for a spot at the state meet. I think our biggest area for improvement as an entire team staying focused on our long-term goal for the end of the season and doing all the things to get us there.”
The Wolverines will run in Homedale on Sept. 14 for the All-SRV meet. The Weiser meet will help them be prepared both physically and mentally for that important race.
“It feels great to see the progress we’ve made in our mental toughness. All the races just seem a bit easier when compared to Weiser,” Hale said.
