WEISER – Jeremy Roberts wants to help spruce up Weiser.
Roberts, a sales representative for Rodda Paint Co., in Ontario, is also president of Better Together, a local non-profit that oversees the annual Community Serve Day event across the region.
Roberts was on hand at the Weiser City Council meeting, Tuesday, Nov. 12, where he briefed local elected leaders on Community Serve Day and asked for support to expand the program into Weiser.
Community Serve Day consists of volunteer teams of local residents who fan out across Malheur and Payette counties to complete a host of civic projects. Those projects range from painting houses, cleaning up parks, planting trees, removing graffiti and other landscaping efforts.
This year the event is slated for April 26.
Roberts said he wanted to meet with the council to get “their blessing and encouragement.”
“I want to try to meet with the chamber in the same way to start to get people on board because it is a great program,” said Roberts.
Roberts said small-scale clean-up projects occurred in Weiser in the past, spearheaded by resident Becky Anderson. In the past, he said, Anderson and a crew of volunteers painted the interiors of the restrooms in City Park.
“That was a great start, but we want to expand,” said Roberts.
Roberts said the goal of Community Serve Day is simple.
“We are just trying to help people who need help and clean up our cities,” he said.
Roberts said he felt like council members “were very receptive.”
“I think they seemed very positive,” he said.
Last year more than 70 Community Serve Day projects were planned across the local area. More than 20 organizations promised to help with the event.
The event, said Roberts, requires a great deal of front-end planning.
“It is a lot of work to get businesses and people in the community on board. You need to organize supplies for the projects and a place to host the week of the event. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle,” he said.
Evelyn Dame, volunteer Community Serve Day coordinator, said the event usually includes at least eight local communities.
“Some years it wanes. Like last year, Vale decided not to do it because they had too much going on,” said Dame.
Community Serve Day officials start to seek volunteers and community projects in January.
Roberts said he is excited about expanding the serve day event to Weiser.
“All we are trying to do is help achieve some of the same success we’ve seen in other communities,” he said.
