Wolverines make it a close game after being down by 16 in the second quarter

Jan. 12 was another night of basketball at Weiser High School.
The Wolverines hosted both the boys and girls Parma Panther basketball programs with games played in both gyms.
The Weiser boys played Parma in a non-conference game over Christmas break. Weiser fell just short in a 44-49 loss.
Heading into their game on Tuesday, Weiser had a 0-1 conference record after their loss to Fruitland. Parma was 0-2 in conference with losses to McCall and Payette.
The game started out with an intense and close contest.  Weiser played man-to-man defense getting a few defensive stops. One off a nice, blocked shot by Tommy Johnson.
The Wolverines scored first; after a minute of play, Jack Shirts fouled on a 3-pointer in the corner and went to the line; making 2 of his 3 free throws.
The teams traded buckets with multiple lead changes and tied scores throughout the first quarter.
Most of the scoring came in the final 2 minutes of the quarter. Brayden Walker got it started with an assist to Carter Jensen beyond the arc for a sweet 3-pointer. Walker soon sunk a 3 pointer of his own. Next trip to offense Walker connected with Jensen again as Jensen drilled a 3-pointer off a Walker pass.
With 5 seconds left in the first the score was 17 all, Parma sunk a deep 3-pointer to go ahead.
At the end of the first, it was Weiser 17, Parma 20.
Parma continued with the momentum in the second quickly adding 8 points.
Weiser’s Johnson battled hard for an offensive rebound. He was fouled on the made shot and went to the line giving the Wolverines their first points of the second, Weiser 20, Parma 28.
Johnson soon brought down another offensive rebound put back shot for 2 more points.
The Wolverines stalled out after that while Parma was able to score. With 2 minutes left to play in the half, Parma was up by 16 points, Weiser 22, Parma 38.
With 30 seconds left, Weiser’s Shirts had a nice assist on a drive inside that he kicked out to Malakye Scott for a 3-pointer ending the half.
Going into the locker room, Weiser was down by 13, 25-38.
The Wolverines went back to man-to-man defense in the second and were able to hold the Panthers to 7 points in the third, while Weiser added 11.
With the tough defense Weiser scored on multiple lay-ins reducing Parma’s lead to 9 points.
At the end of three quarters of play it was Weiser 36, Parma 45.
The Wolverines continued to work hard at getting defensive stops and taking good shots on offense. Halfway into the fourth it was a 5-point game after Scott sunk a 3-pointer for Weiser.
Weiser brought it to within 1 point after a combination of scoring by the Wolverines; Kolin Cook made a bucket for 2, Shirts sunk a 3 pointer, and then Scott added 2 more, Weiser 54, Parma 55.
Weiser was not able to score again, while Parma had a defensive steal and lay-in to bring the game to a close ending in a Weiser loss, 54-57.
The Wolverines were led by Shirts with 13 points, Scott added 12, Johnson had 8, Jensen and Walker both with 6, Cook had 5, Josh Mizar added 3, and Michael Youngberg had 1.
