Weiser beats Buhl 35-6 in season opener

On Aug. 27, the Weiser Wolverines travelled to Buhl for the season non-conference opener.
The first game is always an interesting one because it is a chance to see if practice situations translate to live play. Head Coach Tom Harrison is returning for his fourth year at the helm for Weiser football and he may just have the team who can take it all the way this year.
Weiser has 13 seniors playing and many of them have a lot of SRV conference recognition attached to their names.
The Buhl Indians always come to play so this game was expected to be decent competition for the opener.  The Wolverines won the game handily 35-6, allowing Buhl to score once during the game.
Weiser kicked off to the Indians who returned the ball to their own 35-yard line. The Weiser defense had some great stops, forcing Buhl to punt, but Weiser’s Zander McElroy came up with the block, giving the Wolverine’s great field position at the 30-yard line.
Weiser, however, was unable to connect with a receiver in the end zone and turned the ball over to the Indians.
The Indians would capitalize on a penalty and a hard read on defense to march the ball down to Weiser’s 15-yard line.
A nice sack by Michael Youngberg stopped the Indians and the Weiser defense held the Indians scoreless.
Weiser got the ball back late in the first quarter and after changing sides in the second quarter Spencer connected to Brock Spencer for a 31-yard reception, bringing the Wolverines to the 45 yard line.  Spencer looked down field again and found Evan Haggerty who was double covered and the Indians intercepted the ball at their own 18-yard line.
The Indians couldn’t convert and the Wolverines took the punt to the 42-yard line.
Weiser started off with a Spencer-to-Spencer run to the right side, earning them 15-yards. Brett Spencer then took the quarterback keeper for 35 yards to the 5-yard line. Willy Shirts would rush for three yards and Brett Spencer would score the touchdown on the 2-yard quarterback keeper.  Shirts kicked a great ball for the extra point, bringing the score to 7-0 Weiser.
The Indians started off with an incomplete pass that Payton Albertson almost picked off for the Wolverines.
The Indians kept marching the ball down the field to the 35-yard line with good stops on defense by Brett Spencer, Rylee Willet and many more Wolverines.
Brett Spencer read the offense and intercepted the ball at the 30-yard line, taking it all the way back for a touchdown.  Shirts again kicked a beauty for the extra point and Weiser was up 14-0.
The Indians, this time, were met by the entire defensive line and Jack Burke got in a couple of tackles before they threw three incomplete passes and had to punt.
Weiser had the ball back late in the second quarter and tried to pass the ball to Brock Spencer, but it was incomplete. Brock swung to the right on the next attempt and caught the pass bringing the ball to the 20-yard line. Weiser had one more chance to score, but couldn’t get it done before halftime.
Weiser got the chance first in the third quarter to score and returned the ball to the 25-yard line. Brock Spencer rushed right off the bat for a solid 11 yards. Burke took the flip in the backfield and couldn’t get forward momentum, losing just three yards, but Willy Shirts got the next one and took it six yards down field.
Brock Spencer added two more yards. On the next play Brett Spencer was forced to scramble and was looking for an option with pressure on him when Tristan McMahill gave him some breathing room, allowing Spencer to run for a 59-yard touchdown.
Shirts again made sure the extra point was good, bringing the score to 21-0. The Indians tried yet again to score, but the defense was too strong.
Rylee Willet read the Indian’s offense and intercepted the ball running it all the way to the 6-yard line. This gave Burke the chance to rush the ball in for another Wolverine touchdown and Shirts made sure the extra point was good, bringing the score to 28-0 Wolverines.
On the next possession, in the middle of the third quarter, the Indians rushed for 13 yards in a couple of plays. Next, they threw deep down field and Brett Spencer went up with the receiver, but couldn’t quite get it out of his hands and the Indians finally got on the board.
The extra point was blocked by Brock Spencer, making the score 28-6.
Weiser would return the kick off to the 37-yard line to start the offensive march.  Their rushing game got going with 17 yards and then Willy Shirts broke loose for a 34-yard gain to the 12-yard line.
Burke took the ball the remaining 12 yards for the touchdown and Shirts again made good on the extra point, putting Weiser up 35-6. The Indians tried to get going late in the third quarter, but Weiser’s defense was too strong.
Brayden Walker had a nice stop for the Wolverines. After gaining 18 yards, the Indians threw the ball and this time Kaleb Grove was there for the interception and ran it back 10 yards.  Weiser tried running the ball and then passed to the outside where Brock Spencer took a hit and couldn’t hold onto the ball.
In the fourth quarter the Indians tried to score again but were stopped by the Wolverine defense including a great tackle by Brayden Walker. Willet again had a great tackle to hold the Indians to a short gain while Michael Youngberg and Maddox Stevens added to the tackling totals as well.  On a quick pass to the outside, Jack Burke had an explosive tackle followed by another by Blake Moser and Youngberg.
Forcing the Indians to punt, Stevens and Shirts didn’t allow the punter to kick the ball, sacking him and taking over on the 35-yard line.
Weiser couldn’t get anything going on the next drive, turning the ball over to Buhl by interception.
Weiser’s defense was solid yet again with a great tackle by Stevens and Jesse Lockett. Buhl ran to their right and was met this time by Stevens and Willet for a solid tackle. Running the ball again, the Indians ran right into Willet for another tackle. Adding yet another tackle after the short gain was Levi Estes. This time the Indian quarterback decided to scramble with the ball and ran right into Willet again. This forced the Indians to punt and Weiser took over late in the fourth quarter, substituting some JV players on the last drive.
These players were able to advance 39 yards down field before time expired in the game.
The Wolverines will be in action this Friday at home against Emmett for another non-conference match up.
