Weiser baseball has successful week

Weiser hosted McCall-Donnelly this past Monday as McCall’s field is not playable due to snow and rain. Due to the Wolverines being the visiting team they started out batting
Weiser would tally 23 hits during the game and score all of them for a final of 23-1.
Brett Spencer collected four hits for the Wolverines scoring in the first, second and twice in the third inning. Spencer hit three singles and a triple on the day. Jarret Mink also had a great day at the plate with four hits of his own.  Spencer, Mink, Kooper von Brethorst, Tyler Pope, Jack Burke, and Willy Shirts each had multiple hits for Weiser.
The RBIs were pretty amazing too with Spencer recording five, Mink with four, and von Brethorst and Burke each adding three.
Weiser’s stolen bases were impressive with Eric Torres tallying three, Spencer adding two, and Shirts with one.
On defense for the Wolverines, they had a great game with one error recorded. Jarret Mink got the start for Weiser and went all five innings, with just three batters hitting off of him and the single run being scored. Mink also only walked one batter and struck out nine.
“We had a great game and got a chance to work on our small ball where we might not have had a chance before,” Head Coach Bowe von Brethorst said.  “Mink did a great job pitching for us and his defense definitely went to work,” von Brethorst said.
Weiser vs. Payette
Weiser then travelled to Payette to face the Pirates on Wednesday going all seven innings and winning 8-2.  Weiser didn’t have the hitting fest that they were used to, but they did record eight hits  with runs for the evening.
Seven Wolverine batters hit the ball and Spencer once again led the team with two hits. Eight stolen bases were recorded with von Brethorst, Payton Albertson, and Beau Shields with two each.
At the start of the first inning Weiser didn’t look like the team that would come out on top with the beginning of the order getting the first three outs.
Willy Shirts started on the mound for the Wolverines. Payette would add one to the scoreboard during the first inning with a base hit and a fielder’s choice.
Weiser looked slow to start in the second as well, recording two outs before Koda Coers hit a line drive into centerfield to start the team off.  His was the only hit of the inning before recording the third out.
Weiser handled the defensive side of the game well in the second inning after recording two outs and then loading the bases on a double and two walks.
The Wolverines would hold the Pirates, getting the third out and not allowing the Pirates to score on a ground ball that third baseman Spencer threw to  Shields at first.
Weiser still couldn’t get their mojo going and went three up and three down in the top of the third inning.
Weiser’s defense again got three quick outs during the bottom of three with a pick off by Shirts to first base, a strikeout, and a ground out to Shields at first.
In the top of the fourth inning, Weiser finally added two to the scoreboard with Jack Burke doubling to left field, Spencer getting a single off of a bunt and Mink tripling on a fly ball to right field. The score was 2-1 Weiser.
Then it was Payette’s turn to go three up and three down with a fly out to Shields at first, a strikeout by Shirts, and a ground out to Spencer at third with a great throw to Shields at first.
In the top of the fifth inning Weiser would add four to the score. Shields doubled on a line drive to right field, Albertson walked, and Pope with a double to center field to score both Shields and Albertson.  Von Brethorst singled on a bunt to move Pope to third.  Burke came to the plate and von Brethorst stole second. Pope scored during a wild pitch and von Brethorst moved to third. Von Brethorst would steal home before the end of the
inning bringing the score to 6-1 Weiser.
During the bottom of the fifth inning, Payette only got one base hit and recorded a strikeout, a ground out to Spencer and a line drive that was caught by second baseman Koda Coers.
In the top of the sixth inning three Weiser batters were put on base due to being hit by pitches. Shields, Albertson, and Pope loaded the bases on a two out rally and Shields was able to steal home during the inning bringing the score to 7-1 Weiser.
Payette couldn’t add any to the scoreboard with Weiser’s defense and  Shields striking out another two batters coming in as relief for Shirts.
During the seventh, Spencer doubled to left field and then got to third base on a balk called on the Payette pitcher. Shirts hit the ball to the first baseman and was thrown out at first, but he scored Spencer who was on third. Weiser would go into the bottom of the seventh inning leading 8-1.
Payette would get on base with a walk and then recorded the first out with a ground out to first baseman, Ray Calley.  Another
batter would walk and then Shields recorded a strikeout for out number two. Payette would score on an error and would finally ground out to shortstop, von Brethorst for the final out.
“We were challenged a little this game with hitting and getting the momentum going,” Bowe von Brethorst said. “These young men dug in and stepped up to get the job done.  That’s all you can ask for,” he said.
Weiser vs. New Plymouth
Weiser hosted New Plymouth for the final game during the week on Thursday for a non-conference game. Weiser won the game 14-9, but the game was actually tied 9-9 in the sixth inning when the Wolverines scored six runs to go ahead.
Coers took the mound for the Wolverines pitching four innings and giving up three runs on two hits and striking out five
batters. Kooper von Brethorst and Albertson came in on relief, but New Plymouth took advantage and Weiser had to bring in Jarret Mink to get the win.
The Wolverines also recorded three home runs during the game from Shirts, Pope, and Shields.  In total, the Wolverines had 13 hits including multiple hits from Shirts, Pope, Shields, von Brethorst and Spencer. Pope also recorded three RBIs on the night followed by Shields and Spencer with two.
The Wolverines will host Parma for senior night Monday and Fruitland on Friday.
