Whitney Turner, the daughter of Mike and Sheleigh Turner was chosen as a nominee for the 3A interscholastic star scholarship program.
The Interscholastic Star scholarship program, sponsored by the Idaho High School Activities Association, was established in 1992 to reward outstanding students who excel in extracurricular participation.
Nominees for the scholarships are students who strengthen their school’s programs, are active contributors to school and community organizations and programs, show good citizenship and serve as role models for their peers.
Each high school nominates one junior and then through a written application and an interview, Turner was selected as the top 3A nominee in the state.
Turner has participated in choir, the state solo competition, performed in multiple musicals, served as basketball stats keeper,  and has participated in volleyball, wrestling, and track. She qualified for state in both track and wrestling. She has also been involved in multiple clubs and has maintained a 4.0 grade point average.
Turner shared that although it was little uncomfortable to talk about herself, she was honored that the schools leaders thought of her, and she was very grateful.
She prepared for the interview with mock interviews with her parents who prepared her well because Turner said the practice was more stressful than the real interview, and the real interview ended up being fun.
During the interview the judges told Turner that her writing skills helped her stand out from the other applicants. She wrote about her involvement in so many activities, especially wrestling, that had affected her character.
Turner shared that she has always received a lot of encouragement from her parents to participate in multiple activities and to be a positive participant in each team or group. Her dad also helped her a lot this last year with wrestling.
Turner shared that she feels that Weiser students tend to do well in this competition because the school is really good at encouraging involvement.
“I always feel a lot of school pride as we represent Weiser,” Turner said.
Turner also said that her teachers pushed her to do her best, and not only to do her best at their subjects, but to be a better person.  Her coaches taught her to never give up and made it fun, even when it was hard.
Turner hopes to maintain her 4.0 GPA throughout her senior year, and enjoy her last year of high school to the fullest with continuing to participate in sports and music as she enjoys her time with family and friends.
After high school, she plans to go on a mission for her church and then go to college to study business management  and someday open a bakery.
As the 3A nominee, Turner was one of six candidates for the ultimate honor of Idaho Star. Amaia Clayton – from Renaissance High School was selected as the “Idaho Star” for 2021-2022 and will grace the back covers of the 2022-2023 state tournament programs.
