Trojans beat Wolverines 27-7 in state semifinal road game

It’s been a memorable year for Weiser’s Wolverine football team. The 2024 season came to an end in a loss to Homedale in the SRV semifinal game on Friday, with Weiser bringing home a third place SRV trophy. The Trojans were out for revenge after taking a beating the last time they met Weiser. Above, Weiser quarterback Kolin Cook (6) scored Weiser’s only touchdown on a keeper from the 5-yard line. Weiser ends season with 8-3 record, SRV conference record of 5-0

It was a bitter pill to swallow.

Despite the hard work, preparation and sacrifice, the Wolverines’ hopes for a 4A State Championship berth were dashed by a 27-7 semifinal loss to the Trojans Friday in Homedale.
Homedale will now face off against Sugar-Salem for the 4A state title. The location is still to be determined.
The Diggers beat the Kimberly Bulldogs 27-0 in the state’s eastern semifinal game Nov. 14.
Weiser came to play Friday night, but confronted a Homedale team that appeared decidedly more determined than it did Oct. 4 when the Wolverines beat the Trojans 30-6, Weiser’s first victory over the juggernaut in eight years.
High winds coming in from the northwest and freezing temperatures didn’t help; nor did losing the coin toss, Homedale electing to defer to the second half.
The 40-degree night felt like 27 due to windchill, according to AccuWeather.
With the wind at their back, the Trojans kicked the ball into the endzone, forcing the Wolverine offense to start the game at its own 20-yard line.
Senior running back Kash Cobb, who has historically been able to find a crease somewhere in the defensive line, was immediately mobbed by a cluster of defenders at the line of scrimmage on the first play of the game. Homedale seemed ready for Weiser’s normally powerful ground game that includes Cobb, junior Cole Ingle and senior Weston Black.
 Weiser’s first series ended up a three-and-out.
Much of the game progressed the same way, with Weiser showing hints of its strength at times.
The Wolverines were able to march down the field toward the end of the first half, senior quarterback Kolin Cook finding the endzone on a keeper from the 5-yard line with only two seconds left on the clock. Senior Diego Delgadillo’s extra point narrowed Homedale’s lead to 20-7 going into the break.
Weiser, however, was unable to manage any more points in the second half, the game ending 27-7 Homedale.
Weiser was awarded the third-place trophy following the game, but it did little to cushion the sting felt by a team that had intentions of going all the way.
“The kids played extremely hard,” head coach Tom Harrison told the Signal American following the presentation. “They worked extremely hard this week to try to make it happen and sometimes it just doesn’t happen. We didn’t make the plays we needed to make today. Right from the start, we just didn’t get it done.
“We got the ball to start with and didn’t come out and establish anything. We had a three-and-out and that didn’t help, and then we were kicking into the wind. The wind really bit us hard and early. By them winning the kick and then being backed up and starting out on the 20, that makes it tough. Last time we played them, we had that to our advantage, but we didn’t have that this time.”
Weiser ends the 2024 season 8-3, with a six-game winning streak following a two-game skid to start the season, and 5-0 in conference play enroute to winning the SRV Championship.
