Every team in the SRV has a loss and even with three conference losses, the Wolverines are still in the thick of it for a higher seed at District with three games to go.
Weiser traveled to Cole Valley Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Having hosted the Chargers earlier in the season and suffering a loss, it was hoped this was redemption time as the Wolverines have been playing cohesively of late. Alas, it was not to be as Cole Valley began the game on full court pressure defense and kept that defense extended allowing no easy or close shots for our players. It was never a blow out and Weiser was within striking distance a few times but time ran out as CV would win 68-57.
As mentioned, the full court D was evident early. CV won the tip and scored first and second. Kolin Cook drained a three point shot, 5-3 CV. Cook was also fouled making both free throws, 5-7 CV. Shayd Crossley to Cook for his second three pointer, 8-9 CV. Garrett Walker to Crossley for a bucket, 13-10 CV. Crossley returned the favor to Garrett Walker for two, 18-12 CV. Karsten Walker to Owen Funke in the corner for a three point drain, 21-15 CV. Josh Mizar stole the ball and started the fast break. Mizar to Funke for the lay-up, 21-17. Cole Valley would go on a scoring spree to close out the first quarter leading 27-17.
Weiser had the ball to open the second quarter and scored when Cook found Funke for the hoop, 27-19 CV. Isai Herrera had an offensive rebound put back, 29-21 CV. Funke pulled down a “D” rebound, outlet passed to Garrett Walker to Mizar for the finish, 29-23 CV. Garrett Walker had a block which was rare and notable in this game as Cole Valley’s players were all over six feet tall. Cook to Mizar on the drive to the backboard for the shot, 31-25 CV. Mizar to Cook for a three, 41-28 CV. That’s how the score stood at half time.
Weiser’s scoring began with Garrett Walker finding Crossley for the shot, 44-30 CV. Herrera pulled down a defensive rebound, threw a half court pass to a streaking Cook. Cook had to catch up to the ball and he did and finished with a gently laid in ball, 44-32 CV. Herrera with an inside move for two, 47-34 CV. Cook to Mizar for the bucket, 49-36 CV. Cook elevated for two, 49-38 CV. Cook was fouled making his second free throw, 50-39 CV. Herrera had the ball at the CV free throw line. He drove down the key and softly laid the ball in, 55-41 CV. Mizar would steal the ball but the buzzer sounded before a shot was made. CV 55, Weiser 41 after three quarters.
Weiser had the ball to open the final quarter. If anyone could own a quarter, this one belonged to Herrera. He took charge of the paint and his defender couldn’t stop him. Mizar to Funke in the corner for a three, 55-44 CV. Cook with a steal and the shot, 60-46 CV. Herrera with a move inside for the bucket, 62-48 CV. Funke to Herrera again with the move and basket, 64-50 CV. Herrera again for two, 64-52 CV. Cook drove from the right side of the key along the baseline and reversed the shot in off the glass over his 6’6” defender, 64-54 CV. Cook to Mizar for the last basket, a three. Cole Valley won the game 68-57.
Scoring: Cook 20, Herrera 12, Funke 10, Mizar 9, Crossley 4 and Garrett Walker 2.
The Wolverines regular season play is down to two conference games next week. They play Payette at home on Feb. 12 and travel to McCall on Feb. 14.
