The defensive battle ended in a Wolverine conference loss to the Panthers

In a night of basketball palooza the Weiser Wolverines hosted the Parma Panthers in a tough match up of the Snake River Valley’s top seeded conference teams.
The two teams met in mid-December where Weiser picked up their first loss of the season, losing 43-47.
The two teams match up well against each other providing some exciting and explosive moments. The second contest ended much the same as the first, Weiser losing by six, 33-36.
It was a defensive battle in the first quarter. The first score came after 4 minutes of play when Weiser’s Ellie Shirts was fouled on a drive to the hoop. She went to the line where she sunk both of her free throws.
A couple of minutes later, Weiser added three more points off a Mattie Shirts kick out pass from inside to Kailee Lerew beyond the arc for 3 points.
Lerew then grabbed a loose ball on defense, advancing the ball up the court to Kendall Rynearson as she broke to the basket for a lay in and 2 points.
The first quarter ended with Weiser shutting out Parma, Weiser 7, Parma 0.
The Panthers took control of the second quarter, tying the game at 9 all with 2:30 left in the half.
Parma was able to score a few more buckets off a three-quarter court press that Weiser struggled to get past.
With 10 seconds remaining, E. Shirts had an assist as she delivered the ball to Rynearson for 2 points.
At the end of the second, it was Weiser 11, Parma 14.
In a man-to-man defense, the Wolverines closed the gap tying the game at 17 all off a Tobie Noyer offensive rebound put back with 5:35 remaining in the third.
Noyer soon found Macy Maloney on an assist for a Weiser 3-pointer and a Wolverine lead, 20-19.
The third quarter continued back and forth with multiple lead changes. With 13 seconds left in the third, Lerew fed Brady Reed the ball for a solid 3-pointer and again tying the game at 27 all.
The Panthers were able to secure a loose ball and sunk a 3-pointer to close out the third, Weiser 27, Parma 30.
Neither team was willing to give an inch; so, the physical, defensive battle continued.
Reed tied the game again with an offensive rebound and 2 points. Parma answered with a bucket of their own.
Rynearson made a skip pass over the defense in the key to Reed, where she drilled a nice 3-pointer, giving Weiser the 1-point lead, 33-32 with 6:30 left in the game.
Weiser would not score again in the fourth while Parma slowly added a couple of free throws, a bucket, and a 3-pointer.
The hard-fought battle went to Parma. Weiser down by six suffered a heartbreaking loss, 33 to 39.
The Wolverines were led by Reed with 12 points, M. Shirts with 6, Lerew and Rynearson each contributed 4, Maloney had 3, and E. Shirts and Noyer each with 2.

Scores at the end of quarters:
Weiser Parma

Second: 11 14
Third: 27 30
Fourth: 33 39
The Wolverines will have a week-long break before they are on the road, playing in Fruitland on Thursday, Jan. 19 and then in Payette on Saturday, Jan. 21.
