Tolman records back-to-back Idaho 3A State title victories

Weiser High School singles tennis player, Emma Tolman, successfully defended her 2021 Idaho 3A State Championship title last weekend, beating teammate Kristy Bake 6-3, 6-1 at Ridgeview High School in Nampa for back-to-back wins.
Bake beat Tolman 7-5, 6-4 in the district championship the previous weekend. Tolman found herself in a similar situation last year, losing the district championship to Parma’s Austyn Harris, only to turn around and beat her for the state championship.
“It was exciting; they each played well and handled everyone in the brackets all the way up to the championship match where they met for the title,” said Weiser Head Tennis Coach Scott Manser about Saturday’s championship. “They both ended the season with one loss all season, and it was against each other. We were fortunate to have it happen. It was pretty exciting.”
Manser noted that Tolman seemed to raise her level of play during the state championship rounds.
“She just came out and ratcheted up the intensity,” he said. “She looked like she was on another level of intensity and was really aggressive.”
Tolman said she felt the pressure but was excited to do what many have not.
“I think mostly I just felt proud of myself because that’s not an easy thing to do,” she said. “It’s hard to win championships because when you win the first one everyone is kind of out to get you, and it’s hard mentally too because everyone is expecting you to win. I’m just happy I was able to do it.”
Tolman expressed gratitude toward her coaches, teammates, and family for helping her achieve her goal.
In other state action, Huntyr McClellan and Charlie Woods earned Runner-Up in the boys’ doubles state championship, falling 4-6, 2-6 to Parma, the only team to beat them this season. McClellan and Woods lost to Parma twice in the regular season, again in the district championship and, finally, a fourth time during last weekend’s state championship.
The girls team placed third overall at the state meet, with the boys’ team finishing in fourth place.
Boys’ singles player Kolin Cook also participated at the state competition but did not place.
Girls’ doubles, Britynn Seward and Bailey Coleman were one win away from placing with a tournament record of 3-2.
