Thomason Funeral to hold Christmas Remembrance event
Losing a loved one is a difficult experience to live through, to say the least, but it can be more challenging especially during the holiday season.
That is why Thomason Funeral Home will hold its first annual Christmas Holiday Remembrance event on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. The event, to be held at their chapel at 221 E. Court St., aims to bring together those who have gone through loss and want to lift each other up for the Holiday Season.
“I know firsthand that the holidays are extremely difficult on people who have lost someone close to them during this time of year, or any time of the year,” said Thomason Funeral Home Director Gary Jensen. “It is so hard when everyone around you is celebrating the Christmas season and you are still mourning and feeling alone. It really does not matter if it is one month or 10 years; those memories and loss are still there.”
Jensen, who lost his mother over eight years ago, knows all too well the pain of loss, but also emphasized that the Dec. 18 event is not meant to be a somber occasion.
“It will be a time of remembrance and celebration for those we have loved and lost; a time for us to remember the happiness and joy our loved ones brought to us,” he explained. “It is about celebrating the lives of people that can no longer be with us for the Holiday Season. What a great way for our community to come together and support one another during such a difficult time.”
The non-denominational event is open to anyone who has lost a loved one, regardless of how long ago. Weiser Community Church Pastor, Steve Penner, is scheduled to share a Christmas message of hope with special musical performances and refreshments.
Guests are encouraged to bring an ornament, which will be placed on the Christmas tree in remembrance of their loved ones. Ornaments will be provided for those who do not bring one. “We would also love families to bring a 5x7 or smaller unframed photo of their family member that will be displayed,” Jensen said. “These photos can be dropped off at the funeral home any time before the program on Dec. 18.”
Jensen, who graduated from Weiser High School in 1983, began his career in Carson City, Nev. before returning to Weiser. He works along side his wife Yvonne, Angi York, Steve Penner, and son, Trey, who is also a funeral director at the associated Lienkaemper Funeral Chapel in Ontario, Ore.
“What a blessing it has been to come back home and serve the families that I know and love,” Jensen added. “We started doing a remembrance program when we lived in Nevada and it grew into something very special for our community there. We are hoping to do the same here in Weiser.”
