They came, they ran, they jumped and they threw

The super thing about small athletes is they don’t really care where they run, jump or throw. This year, it was a challenge to host the annual Weiser Recreation track camp and meet. 

 Yes, there is a new track at the high school but the grounds around it are not ready for over a 100 people meandering around on the newly planted grass. Rather than cancel this event, it was decided to host it at the Weiser Middle School. Yes, it’s dirt but that’s where generations of middle school athletes have practiced spring track. The bigger challenge was no long jump pit to jump in. Running is running be it on grass, dirt or on all weather surface track. 

 After a coordinated effort between the Weiser School District, the City of Weiser street crew and the WRD, a bucket load of sand was delivered to the WMS track. Wha-la, a sand pit is born. No board to jump off of? No problem. Another engineering feet by myself was using my rubber welcoming mats and four, five inch bolts pounded into the ground solving that issue. What’s next? No bathroom close? How about a port-a-potty delivered to the site just for this camp. 

 They say it takes a village to raise a child. Seems like we had a village to pull this entire camp off and oh what fun we had despite the heat.

 Once again, the out of towners came to participate and pit their skills against our local athletes. I am so excited about the caliber of athletes that are growing up in our town. My gosh, even some two years olds are gifted already. 

 Thanks to the many people who brought their children, who hooted and hollered for everyone, brought canopies to shade our little ones and all those who volunteered to make this annual event a rousing success. Here’s hoping we can run at the high school next year.
