With the summer months rolling around it is time for the Weiser Memorial Pool to open up. This also means the swim team is back in action and is looking forward to another great season.
The coach of the swim team, Mattie Shirts, has coached the team for 3 years now. This year she has a great turnout with 42 kids coming out to participate.
Alongside Shirts are two other coaches, Tatem Clary and Evie Dolton, helping to run the program.
The team is very inclusive, accepting any range of kids. The only requirements to be on the team are to be able to swim from one end of the pool and back, and to be younger than 18.
There is also a $45 fee to join the team on top of the previous requirements.
The kids train almost every day, with practice from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. every weekday.
Last year, the team performed extremely well with many of the kids bringing home many medals due to their great efforts.
This year, the team will compete against nine other teams from Cascade, Hidden Springs, Mountain Home, Nampa, Ontario, Parma, Weiser, Boise West Y,  and Boise South Y.
Shirts hopes that through this experience the kids will learn many things about putting in hard work and having enough grit and determination to face the world.
“Swimming is one of the toughest sports and that is coming from someone who has done every sport. It takes a lot of grit. I hope it teaches teens to push through being tired and being exhausted. It teaches them hard work and endurance,” Shirts said.
The swim team’s first meet was here in Weiser this past Saturday.
The swim team is not the only thing happening at Weiser’s public pool, however. There is a whole wealth of fun things happening there.
The pool has lap swim and water aerobics from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Lap swim will also be held from noon to 1 p.m.
Open swim is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, but on Saturday the time is extended from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
There will also be rentals as well from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays. Pool rentals cost $60 per hour.
The daily fee to use the pool will be $3 for 12 and under, $4 for 13 and older, and seniors (55 and older) will go for $3. Kids 2 and under swim for free with an adult.
If you would rather get a season pass it will cost $60 for individuals and $50 for seniors. You can also get a family plan that supports five people for $245 with each additional member being $20 more.
With the days only getting hotter and hotter, it is the perfect time to take advantage of the public pool and have fun!
