Senior week produces a win and a tie

The Wolverines annual senior night celebration stretched into the whole week with a 3-0 win over Fruitland in the 2022 season final home game last Tuesday, Oct. 4, followed by a 2-2 tie on Thursday with conference nemesis McCall-Donnelly.
Senior night games are made special by honoring senior players, and the 2022 team holds a group of not only four-year team members, but students whose educational roots run deep in the Weiser School District. Those recognized were Alex Magana (1), Kasey Kautz (2), Morgan Brunson (4), Brian Munoz (8), Bryan Juarez (16), and Juan Cervantes (17), along with the team’s managers and stats keepers Ashley Pardo Miramontes and Maya Almanza. The ceremony included recognition of Fruitland’s two seniors, Eduardo Mosquedo (10) and Jose Espinoza (14).
Junior forward Danny Clemmer (15) scored Weiser’s first half goal 12 minutes into the game on a penalty kick from outside the 18-yard box on the right. Sailing up and over, the ball just got through the Grizzly goalie’s hands to hit the net.
Weiser scored twice more in the second half. Sophomore forward Santiago Perez (9) took the ball in on the right, shooting hard. The ball glanced off the back outside of a Fruitland defender’s foot, bouncing in for the score.
In the 57th minute, Perez and Magana (1) teamed up, with Magana powering the ball past the keeper for the third goal.
The teams challenged each other the entire 80 minutes, keeping the ball moving from one end of the field to the other. Weiser put up 12 shots, bagging the three. Wolverine goalkeeper Diego Delgadillo made nine saves.
“The seniors had a wonderful night,” Coach Kathy Bokides said. “All I can say is they are prepared to take it as far as they can.”
The win moved the Wolverines conference record to 6-1, with one game remaining in regular season play before District championships being played this week.
In 4 p.m. action, Weiser’s junior varsity team defeated the Grizzlies 6-2. Scoring for the Wolverines were Keller King with two goals, and Brayden Nordgren, Edgar Ramirez, Dauge McClellan, and Thayne Blanchard with one goal apiece.
On Monday, the JV Wolverines hosted Caldwell’s Cougars in a late-scheduled game, taking a 6-0 loss.
Lady Wolverines vs. Payette
In Payette on Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Lady Wolverines defeated the Lady Pirates 5-1 to finish the regular season with a 3-5 conference record. The Lady Wolverines were set to face Fruitland on Tuesday, Oct. 11, in District playoffs.
Weiser 2, McCall 2
The Wolverines matched the McCall-Donnelly Vandals goal for goal on Thursday night in McCall ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
That result moved the Wolverines season conference record to 6-1-1, and the Vandals to 6-0-2.
The Vandals scored first in the first half, but the Wolverines answered within two minutes. Santiago Perez (9) soloed on Weiser’s score by weaving the ball through the defenders on the left and banging it past the Vandal goalie. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.
Again, McCall scored ahead of the Wolverines in the second when the ball took a bounce out of Weiser goalie Diego Delgadillo’s hands. Vandal senior Rylan Pate was in position to kick it back for the goal.
Minutes later, McCall’s keeper moved out to meet Weiser’s oncoming run, hitting Wolverine Danny Clemmer (15) hard and earning a foul. Junior defender Toren Walker (3)  took the penalty kick from the right, crossing the ball to the posts and past the reach of the goalie tying the score at 2-2 where it stood when the final whistle blew.
“We did our best and showed ourselves we can beat them,” Weiser junior midfielder Edgar Lazaro (12) said. “We just have to do more practice preparing for what they do.”
Senior forward and a team captain Brian Munoz (8) agreed.
“I think the McCall game was important because it was a decider for who would be the number one seed in Districts,” Munoz said. “Going ahead in the game and tying with them means we can beat them. McCall is a very good team, but they do have some weaknesses. For the most part we controlled the game,” Munoz added. “There are things we will work on. We have a strong mentality and we will keep it going into the Fruitland game.”
The Wolverines opened District 3 3A playoffs yesterday in Weiser, but it was after this week’s edition of the Weiser Signal American went to the press.
Weiser’s junior varsity Wolverines finished their season with a 2-1 win over McCall. Wolverine Thayn Blanchard (14) tied the score with a goal in the first half, then scored again in the second.
