Recently, the Weiser Boy Scouts of America Scout Troop 350 had a very special opportunity to learn about one of the most important things: first aid, with help from the organization Stop the Bleed.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that first aid is one of the most important tools. There may come a time in your life when your life or someone else’s may be endangered, and that is why first aid is so important.
Sure, nowadays we are just a couple of feet from the phone at all times, but it always takes time for police or ambulances to show up, and in that in-between time, anything could happen.
Troop 350 knows this very well and some of their members have already been taught the importance of first aid, with an influx of new members, it became clear that something needed to be done to teach these young kids this important task.
Thus Troop 350 signed up for a class on first aid run by an organization called Stop the Bleed. Run by the American College of Surgeons, the organization aims to not only make first aid easier to perform thanks to the various kits they sell and give away but also to teach people how to do first aid.
The event was held at Bee Tree Folk School and was taught by Shanie McLaren, someone who has held many similar events in Weiser.
During the roughly 2 hour course, the Scout Troop learned a great many things. They learned about why first aid is important, what to do when you call 911, how to slow the bleeding of a person, how to apply a turning kit, and many more valuable lessons that all the Scouts took to heart.
The Scouts for their hard work and effort were even provided with mini first aid kits to bring home with them including a turning kit, bandages, cloth, and even surgeon shears!
All the kids had a blast. Even the Scouts who knew all the information already, still appreciated watching the new kids learn too.
One Scout, Anya Boles, despite knowing some of the stuff already, was super excited to have her first aid kit and expressed the importance of having one.
“Even though I am young I want to be able to help my family and with my first aid kit, I will be able to with ease. Even though there was some information I already knew here I still loved the refresher on it and the new stuff I learned was important too,” Boles said.
Scout leader, Jeremy Boles, was also very pleased with the event and was happy to work with another organization.
“It was really special for us and Bee Tree to work together to help teach these kids something new. I know some of them didn’t gain as much as others but everyone still had a great deal of fun and those first aid kits were super neat,” Boles said.
If you want to join in on the fun sometime, feel free to join Troop 350. They are always looking for new members. They meet every Wednesday at the Scout house at 638 East Second St. They hope to see you soon and join them on their future adventures.
