New sidewalk soon atop Memorial Park

A new sidewalk will soon ring the top of the hill overlooking the football field at Weiser’s Memorial Park.
 A grant from the LOR Foundation, supplemented by city funds, will pay to put in 620 feet of fresh pavement and tear out the existing bollards – the stubby concrete pillars that have started to list over the years.
 “It’s been needed for quite some time,” said Weiser Public Works Director Mike Campbell. “It will look much nicer when it’s done.”
 On April 14, the Weiser City Council approved the $37,795 project. The bulk of the funding – $29,850 – came from the LOR Foundation, the Colorado non-profit that has been funding public improvement projects in Weiser since 2023.
 The city agreed to chip in $7,945 to make sure the new sidewalk connects to the one already running down the hill behind the Greenhouse after-school program. Campbell said the new sidewalk should not impact parking for football games and other events.
 The low and winning bid came from Granite Excavation, which is already in town working on the major overhaul to East Commercial Street. With sidewalks on the contractor’s to-do list, Campbell said he expects the Memorial Park addition to be completed sometime in June. 
 “The people of Weiser will appreciate it, too,” Mayor Randy Hibberd said.
 Campbell also outlined a goal to create a walkway that would put pavement around the perimeter of Memorial Park. Improvements made to the Fourth Street plan include curb, gutter and sidewalk, running along the other end of the football field.
 Weiser has gradually worked to make itself more pedestrian friendly as grant funding becomes available. Campbell noted the sidewalk now running along Indianhead Road from Weiser High School to Rolling Hills Golf Course.
