A new school year is upon us, but summer activities still abound

It’s hard to believe that the new school year has started. All schools are now in classes today reacquainting with old friends, meeting new students and their teachers.
With the excitement of the change from summer activities to school, students may not be paying close attention when crossing the streets. Drivers please be careful around school zones for the youngsters and drive the speed limit of 20 miles per hour in school zones.
Also, when the stop arms are out and the lights are flashing on the school buses, you must stop. Sometimes the wait may be long due to the bus driver making sure each child is off and has safely crossed the street. So be patient. It is better to wait than have an accident. You can be fined and ticketed if you pass a bus while the stop arms are out.
School sports have started, and Weiser High School teams are now practicing. The first scheduled game for the fall season is a volleyball jamboree in Parma on Aug. 21. Please look on page 9 in today’s edition of the Weiser Signal American for the schedules for football, boys and girls’ soccer, volleyball and cross country. Come out and support our teams and cheer them on to victory.
It is a great day to be a Wolverine!
There are a few new faces this year in the classrooms and administrative positions in all four schools. New staff are featured in today’s paper starting on page 1 and jumping to page 16. Read all about them and welcome them to our wonderful community.
The lightning storm wreaked havoc around the area with many fires started, and thousands of acres burning. The smoke is settling in the valley so please be careful while outside, especially if you are in the high-risk category.
Our firefighters have been working very hard in trying to get the fires contained and away from structures. The Paddock fire hit close to home with Washington County Disaster Management posting a possible evacuation for residents east of Weiser. Read more on this story in today’s edition and updates on our Facebook page.
Arrow-Heart Adventure Camp had a fun and exciting rafting trip on Aug. 3. They invited the Signal American’s editor Philip Janquart to join them, and he had a great time. The pictures showed the kids having a great time. Look for the exciting story in this edition.
There are many fun and upcoming events happening in Weiser. The Weiser Public Library, with funding from the LOR Foundation, will sponsor a second movie night. Be transported to 1955 in a time traveling DeLorean in this 1980s hit, “Back to the Future.” The movie starts at dusk, 9 p.m. There will be free popcorn, hot dogs, cotton candy and shaved ice. Bring a blanket, water bottles and enjoy one of the greatest sci-fi movies of the 1980s.
The Farmer’s Market is still going on at Weiser City Park on Thursdays, starting at 5 p.m. Come out and enjoy the fresh local produce and other items from the vendors.
Have fun and enjoy your week.
