Every year the Signal American holds its Easter Coloring Contest, with a boy and a girl chosen as grand prize winners.
The lucky boy and girl are awarded a brand-new bicycle compliments of Dave Coleman, owner of Pioneer Express Market in Weiser.
This year’s winners are Ryan Longgood, 10, and Fiona Syme, 9, both of Weiser.
“I was shocked,” Ryan said, as he ogled over his new bike. Despite winning the grand prize, he said that “Having fun and hanging out with family” is the best part of Easter.
Fiona who likewise expressed shock at winning the grand prize, said that she also likes spending time with family, but also her friend who she saw at her church’s Easter Egg Hunt where there was also a potluck.
Coleman said he has been supplying the bikes for the grand prize winners for 11 years.
“My wife loves to go bike shopping,” he said. “Bi-Mart used to do it, but they quit selling bicycles and they asked me if I would do it,” he explained. “They approached me about it and I said “yes” because I like to see kids getting exercise rather than playing video games. Hopefully they’ll utilize them, you know, plus if they live close enough, they can ride down here during the summer and get candy.”
Pioneer Express has been a family-owned business in Weiser since 1979. Coleman has been the owner since 1994.
The market is known for its food and friendly service.
“Our food deli is better than ever and we have new items, so you need to come by and try them out,” Coleman said. “We have the friendliest crew in town.”
