After a long gap in games from the opening of the season, and a 53-37 conference loss in McCall on Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Lady Weiser Wolverine basketball team faced off against the Nampa Christian Trojans for the second time this season, this time on their home court. In the previous game, Weiser won in overtime by just one point. In this match, Weiser dominated and won with a final score of 43 to 20.
Both teams played man-to-man defense, but Weiser switched to a zone in the fourth quarter, which slowed down the game and limited the Trojans’ shot opportunities.
Weiser was first to post points when sophomore Evie Dolton was fouled on a shot. Going to the line, she made the front end of her free throws.
Junior Hailey Eames started a run of Wolverine plays when she blocked a Nampa Christian shot. A few passes later junior Kailee Lerew delivered a good pass to senior Kendall Rynearson for a bucket.
The two teams exchanged a few baskets on fast breaks. Each team was successful in breaking the full-court press. Senior Danica Lockett found Eames open on the block, allowing for an easy lay-in. A few minutes later, Lockett scored two additional points on free throws.
The first quarter ended with Weiser up, 9 to 4.
Weiser began the second period with strong defense. Lerew intercepted the ball and passed it up court to sophomore Ellie Shirts, who sprinted past the Nampa Christian defense and scored.
Early in the second period, Lerew had already accumulated three fouls and was benched. Weiser, lacking their point guard, found it difficult to bring the ball up the court and establish their offensive game. The Trojans took advantage of the situation and narrowed the score to just one point with 3:39 remaining in the first half.
The Wolverines regrouped, put Lerew back in, and broke the Nampa Christian full-court press. Shirts scored with a lay-up and Eames grabbed a rebound and scored with a putback.
Going into the locker room at half time it was Weiser 15, Nampa Christian 10.
Shirts opened up the scoring in the second half for Weiser with 2 free throws. Soon after, Lerew passed the ball to Rynearson on the block who quickly passed it out to Shirts beyond the arc for a 3-pointer.
The Wolverines continued with strong defensive pressure on the Trojans, creating multiple fast break opportunities. Senior Trista Buescher took advantage of one such opportunity and scored on a layup.
Weiser extended their lead against Nampa Christian, finishing the third quarter with a score of 30-12.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Nampa Christian scored two quick 3-pointers, bringing the score to 18-30 in favor of Weiser.
Lockett scored 2 points for Weiser with a smooth baseline floater that hit nothing but net. Shortly after, Shirts dribbled up court on a fast break and found Eames streaking towards the basket for a layup, resulting in 2 more points for their team.
In the last minute of the game, Buescher was heavily guarded, but she managed to take the ball to the hoop and make a layup. Three Trojans tried to stop her, but she succeeded. The Wolverines finished the nigh with a solid 43-20 win.
Weiser was led in scoring by Shirts with 11 points, Eames had 8, and Buescher contributed 7. Dolton and Rynearson both had 5 points. Lockett ended the night with 4, Lucy Hickey 2 and Paisley Noyer 1.
