With the Highway 95 closure between Council and New Meadows expected to continue at least through April, McCall’s Vandals teams are navigating to competitions in the Treasure Valley via SH 55. Resulting schedule changes included Weiser’s away game to McCall originally set for Monday, March 31, to be moved to Weiser on Wednesday, April 2, as well as keeping the at home game between the two teams on Thursday, April 3.
A two run homer in the first inning by Weiser’s catcher Bennett Torres put Weiser on the board in the first home game of the season against conference opponent McCall. Picking up their fourth consecutive win since March 21, the Wolverines defeated the Vandals by a score of 15-3.
Weiser’s Shirts sisters each scored a run during the same at-bat in the second inning, with Sophia (9) scoring from third on a catcher’s error, and Ellie (1)  crossing home from third on a passed ball, putting the Wolverines up 4-0.
McCall closed the gap to 4-3 in the top of the third inning. Cedar Saxton singled on a fly ball to left field, scoring Val Sofaly. Then a double by Payton Woolcott scored Saxton and Bella Potts, putting the Vandals briefly within reach of a turnaround.
Weiser’s Taylor Mordhorst (11) ground out to McCall’s third baseman in the bottom half, scoring Ali Navarette (2), increasing Weiser’s lead to 5-3 going into the top of the fourth, where the Vandals went three up, three down with two strikeouts and a line out.
The Wolverines scored seven runs on no hits, three errors, a walk, and a steal of home in the bottom of the fourth. Weiser 12, McCall 3.
Another dry half in the top of the fifth for McCall, with one on base on a single, then a ground out and two strikeouts closing the half.
Torres was walked in the first at bat in the bottom, followed by Navarrete hitting a hard grounder to center for a double. Designated hitter Natalya Hoobery smashed a line drive home run to center field for three more Weiser runs, and the 15-3 win.
The Wolverines jumped to an 18-0 lead in the top halves of the first two of three innings played in Thursday’s game. Runs in the first inning mounted off of five hits made by Navarrete, Mordhorst, Jessica Waite, S. Shirts, and Jordan Stromberg.
In the second inning, Mordhorst came to bat twice, hitting a double and scoring one run the first time, with an error scoring another. E. Shirts singled, scoring a run, Stromberg scored two on a double, another error scored two runs, and Mordhorst scored another two on a single.
Weiser’s Ari Marquez singled on a line drive to left in the third, scoring S. Shirts.
The Vandals struggled offensively, getting just one hit over the three innings, with the Wolverines’ 19 total runs coming off of 12 hits.
In the circle for Weiser in both games, Madi Janicek tallied 16 strikeouts, allowing three runs on four hits Wednesday, and zero runs on one hit on Thursday.
The Wolverines travel to Baker City on Friday, April 11, for a doubleheader. They will be back in SRV action in Homedale on Monday, April 14, and then host the Trojans in Weiser on Wednesday, April 16.
