Homedale claims district title with narrow 6-3 win over Weiser
Weiser’s Lady Wolverine softball team sealed a trip to the 3A State tournament in Blackfoot with a 10-1 win over McCall-Donnelly on Monday, May 8, sending them to the 3A District 3 championship game in Homedale on Wednesday, May 10.
Monday’s game was called deep in the fourth inning because of lightning, but the Wolverines were leading 10-1 at that point with two outs, and Danica Lockett had just singled on a hard ground ball to left field, setting up the potential for more runs.
The Wolverines scored 10 runs on seven hits, four of them homeruns. Senior Tobie Noyer led the Wolverines in hits with two, both homeruns, scoring four. Macy Maloney homered on a line drive to left field in Weiser’s half of the second inning for one run, and just ahead of T. Noyer’s fourth-inning homerun, Paisley Noyer hit one of her own to score two.
Weiser scored another three runs on errors.
Lockett was on the mound for Weiser, allowing one run on five hits, and striking out two.
Homedale
In Wednesday’s championship game, Homedale’s Lady Trojans took a six-run lead over four innings while the Wolverines struggled to mount an offense.
With no outs, two walks and an error in the top of the fifth, Weiser had the bases loaded. Both Lockett and Abi Wilkins scored on a wild pitch, changing the Trojans lead to 6-2. In the bottom half, Weiser’s infield defense shut down Homedale in four at-bats.
Up to bat first in the top of the fifth, P. Noyer singled on a hard ground ball to center field, followed by Hannah Swank going to first on a walk. With two outs, Wilkins doubled on a line drive to center, scoring Noyer and cutting Homedale’s lead by half, where it stayed at the end of six and a-half innings.
Weiser scored three runs on four hits, and Homedale scored six runs on two hits.
The State 3A tournament starts on Friday, May 19, in Blackfoot. Weiser and Homedale are listed on the bracket to play each other at 11 a.m.
Good luck, Lady Wolverines!
