Lady Wolverines beat the Pirates 9-2, JV wins 4-1

Weiser girls’ soccer played the Payette Pirates in a conference matchup at home on Sept. 20. The Wolverines varsity beat the Pirates 9-2 and the JV won 4-1.
Payette has struggled in recent years to field a full varsity and JV team and this year is no different. The JV ended up playing seven on seven with 30-minute periods because they didn’t have enough players to put the usual 11 on the field. Payette’s varsity had just enough for a full team with one sub.
Both teams came out strong with play going back and forth with no score for the first three minutes. An offsides call against Payette led to a kick by Weiser’s Brittany Magana from midfield. Her teammates were in place and ready for the ball which allowed number 28, Beth Phillips to get the first goal of the game.
The ball changed hands for the next several minutes with multiple shots on goal from both teams, but nothing got past Weiser goalie Whitney Turner. Weiser then went on a bit of a scoring streak with number 10 Fatima Travanco getting a goal followed by two from Phillips and one from number 5 Macy Maloney, all within a minute of each other. Weiser’s final goal of the first half came from Emily Christopherson, number 7, to end the half with a score of 6-0 in favor of Weiser.
The start of the second half saw a goalie change for the Wolverines with number 16 Josie Cervantes taking charge of the box. It also had a much more aggressive Payette team on the field which kept Weiser from scoring for the first 14 minutes.  Weiser then scored on a long deep kick by B. Magana that went just over the Pirates goalie. Eight minutes later Phillips scored her fourth and final goal. A minute later Payette got on the scoreboard with their first goal of the game.
Weiser’s B. Magana scored the final goal for the Wolverines with 14 minutes left in the half. Payette was able to get one more past Weiser’s goalie ending the game with a score of 9-2 and a win for Weiser.
“While playing against Payette gave us the opportunity to practice what we have been working on,” said assistant coach Kimi Kelley. “We focused on passing, lots of passing! Also it was a great opportunity to allow our less experienced players to have some play time.”
Macy Maloney had six shots on goal, one assist and one goal. Beth Phillips had four shots in addition to her four goals. Emily Christopherson had three shots, one assist and one goal. Brittany Magana had three shots, one assist and two goals. Fatima Travanco had two shots with one goal and Roma Walker, Daniela Ixta, Alia Oarbeascoa, and Diana Magana had one shot each on goal.
Weiser played Baker City on Monday and McCall-Donnelly on Tuesday. No score were available at press time. On Thursday they will face the Fruitland Grizzlies on Weiser’s home field.
