As quickly as one sports season ends, another begins.
Weiser High School’s Lady Wolverine basketball players hit the court after school on Monday, Nov. 4, in tryouts for the 2024-25 season.
“We had tryouts Monday and Tuesday,” head coach Laraine Harrison told the Signal American. “We made our teams after Tuesday’s tryouts and had our first practice with our teams on Wednesday.”
Harrison was pleased with the good group of players that turned out and said she is extremely excited for the season.
“We have several returners for our varsity team, including senior guard Kailee Lerew, junior guard Ellie Shirts, senior guard and forward Lucy Hickey, junior forward Evie Dolton, and senior forward Hailey Eames,” Harrison said.
Harrison is equally excited about the new players on the varsity team: senior guard Jordan Stromberg, junior forward and guard Ali Sorenson, senior forward Ashlynn Strasser, and senior guard Sarah Henderson.
“It will be exciting to have an experienced group of upperclassmen,” Harrison said. “They should be familiar with our system and expectations going forward, therefore we can spend more time perfecting things versus learning something new for the first time.
“We definitely like our speed and tempo with these girls,” she added. “They are tough and gritty and will work hard. We’re also excited about our younger teams with our junior varsity and frosh team. We have a strong group of girls and feel very optimistic about our season.”
Harrison is entering her fifth year as WHS’s head coach, and her 13th year as a varsity coach.
“I have never coached a championship team, but I have coached three third-place state finishers, and three consolation bracket wins,” Harrison said. “Those were programs I had taken over when they had losing seasons the prior year.
“We believe if we work hard and continue to get better throughout the season we have a solid shot at the state tournament,” she added.
Assistant coaches for the 2024-25 season are Nikki Erickson, junior varsity and Lillie Smith, frosh.
“Taylor Roberts is going to assist me with the varsity,” Harrison said. “They all do a great job.”
Speaking with a few of the Wolverine seniors, it’s clear the team is looking forward to the season.
“I’m excited to play with a lot of the girls from last year, and I think we can make it to the state tournament this year,” Lucy Hickey said. “And I think we have a good team.”
 Kailee Lerew agreed.
“I’m really excited,” she said. “We have a good group of girls and we’re really strong together. We have played together for a while, and we all get along very well.”
“I’m excited to see how far we’ll make it this year,” Jordan Stromberg added. “We have good energy on our team and a good group of girls.”
The Wolverines new season opens on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Nampa Christian in Nampa. Good luck, Lady Wolverines!
