Weiser’s newly formed Red Paws Soccer Club saw a tremendous turnout on tryouts day at the Weiser Soccer Complex, Saturday, Jan. 6, with more than 100 players “and counting” signing up.
The sign up was timed perfectly, landing before an afternoon snowstorm moved into the valley, allowing the players a couple of hours of time on the field. Even with the winter weather’s arrival last week, motorists on East Park Street may have caught a glimpse of high school age players practicing on the snow covered field at the Complex over an hour and a-half this past Saturday, Jan. 13.
According to coach/organizer Dylan Brown, the players are being split into six teams, with five teams filled, and just a few more middle school aged girls born in 2011, 2012, and 2013 needed to fill out a U13 girls team.
Set teams include two high school age boys teams, with the coaches still determining how to split them up; a girls high school age team; a U13 boys team; a co-ed U9 team that takes in all ages under nine; plus the U13 girls team that still needs a few players.
“We had an inkling this area needed a soccer club, but we were frankly blown away by the turnout on Saturday,” Brown added. “We know we’ll have some growing pains, but we can’t wait to get out on the field.
“We’re urging everyone to sign up for indoor soccer through the Weiser Recreation Department,” Brown said. “The deadline has passed, but Trine (Loenberg), who is leading the program, and the Rec Department will be accepting late registrations next week (Jan. 15-19). Trine and Red Paws Coach Kyle Heller lead the program and it’s a perfect chance to practice!”
In addition, Red Paws is looking for a few more experienced coaches, especially for the younger teams, Brown said.
“We’ve got three more teams than we have coaches, so if anyone is interested in helping out, we would like to hear from them,” Brown said.
