Community spirit is showing up all over Weiser

Weiser’s Community Serve Day drew volunteers to several area projects. Above, Jeff Anderson led a crew in cleaning up behind the Snake River Heritage Center. Below, another group spruced up Veterans and Times Square parks; crews led by Deana Winegar and Kestee Chamberlain completed a kitchen painting project, a new wheelchair ramp was installed, led by David Pyper; the Eaton Depot at the Weiser River Trailhead was prepped and painted, led by Codilyn Ingram and Dave Bean; a yard clean-up was completed, led by Travis Youngberg; and a group of young ladies made cards to give to residents of local care centers and assisted living facilities,. In some ways the stars are aligning around a multitude of opportunities for individuals to become more deeply involved in their own community.
On Saturday, April 26, area volunteers stepped up to help out their neighbors and local civic organizations in Weiser’s inaugural Serve Day.
“The old adage ‘many hands make light work’ was proven true, as 100 volunteers made Weiser’s Serve Day a tremendous success,” project organizer Becky Anderson told the Signal American. “Volunteers worked together to complete eight projects submitted by local individuals, civic groups, and municipalities.”
Some volunteers on a couple of painting projects got an early start ahead of Saturday, putting in some pre-paint prep time with scraping and priming.
Anderson’s list of projects included: painting a kitchen; scraping, priming, and painting the Eaton Depot at the Weiser River Trail trailhead; building a wheelchair ramp; cleaning up unwanted items from behind the Snake River Heritage Center, trash clean up around the city; weed pulling at Veteran’s and Time Square parks; yard clean up; and card making for residents of local care center and assisted living facilities.
Anderson said the Serve Day volunteers were fortified through donations of 50 breakfast sandwiches from McDonalds and coffee from Dude’s Kitchen. Les Schwab donated trash bags and allowed a volunteer on paid time, Anderson added.
“The LOR Foundation provided a $1,200 project sponsorship,” she said. “Every donation, in whatever form, was greatly appreciated.”
A national movement, Serve Day is set for the last Saturday in April every year, Anderson said.
“We are already making plans to participate again in 2026,” Anderson said. “It was beautiful to see people of all ages, and families, giving a helping hand to the community, and working together to make Weiser a better, cleaner place to call home. We’re looking forward to doing even more next year.”
