WHS cheer wraps up season with state appearance

Weiser High School’s cheer team earned a trip to State competition in Idaho Falls after finishing first in Pom performance at Districts in early February. Cheer is nearly a year-around sport, with the team working together throughout the summer in preparation for the fall football season and their first performances often in late August. Congratulations on a great year, Weiser Cheer.

The WHS Cheer Team ended the 2026 season at the state competition held in the Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls.
At every WHS sports game, one of the most important aspects is having the cheer team cheer on the sports team and get the students excited for the game.
The cheer team’s work goes far beyond just being on the sidelines of basketball, with the team having its own competition as well, with this season being another great one for the team.
This year, the cheer team had a large team with a total of 26 athletes participating in the sport. Twelve of those athletes were seniors, making for a really strong team
The cheer team had a bit of a rocky time at districts on Feb. 7 at Meridian High School, with them not doing as well as they did in previous years. However, the team still qualified for state in the category of Pom.
They gave it their all and ended the season incredibly strong, with the team managing to place fifth out of 10 teams.
The team, though facing setbacks as mentioned by their coach, Nicole Ramirez, was still able to have a really great season. Ramirez hopes the athletes view the challenges they faced as opportunities to get stronger as a team.
“Despite setbacks due to injury and illness, the goal was for the athletes to view these challenges as opportunities to grow stronger and more determined,” Ramirez said.
One of the major obstacles the team faced was that a lot of the team were first-year cheerleaders. This led to some safety issues and more things having to be taught.
“With half of the team being first-time cheerleaders, a significant portion of the season was dedicated to teaching fundamentals, specifically focusing on safety, proper stunting grips, and technique,” Ramirez said.
Ramirez also hopes that next season, the team can step out of their comfort zone and start to do more stunting in their routines.
“Next season, we aim to step further out of our comfort zone by incorporating significantly more stunting into our routines,” Ramirez said.
Hopefully, next season the cheer team can continue to improve. I hope that everyone in Weiser cheers on these athletes just like how they cheer on all the other sports!
