Vernon Neil Purcell

Vernon Neil Purcell, 73, Athena, Ore., passed away early Thursday morning, July 17, 2025, after spending a wonderful evening with his son and grandson, one of his favorite things to do.
Born in Weiser, Idaho to Clark and Mary Lou Purcell, Vernon grew up on the family ranch alongside his sisters, Maggie, Patty, and JoAnn. There, they learned to ranch, ride horses, and hunt.
He graduated from Weiser High School with the class of 1970.
The ranching lifestyle led Vernon to his love for rodeo. As a young man he got on his first bull and from there it was a part of who he was. Vernon remained in the rodeo circuit until his late 30s, participating in many rodeos in the Northwest, even winning a few.
Vernon moved to Athena, Ore., in the late 1970s where he met his beautiful wife, Susan, and gained two sons, Dave and Kenny Speed, before having one of their own, Shane Purcell, all of whom he loved dearly. They spent time together hunting, camping, and hiking. Vernon remained in Athena for the remainder of his life.
Vernon adored his six grandchildren, Cadence, Bella, Aaron, Brett, Ian, and Jacob never missing a game or event they were involved in. He was the supporter every grandchild deserves to have.
Vernon’s humor and love for everyone around him will be greatly missed. He was a selfless and amazing man.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Susan Purcell; sisters, Maggie Rollins, Patty Young, and JoAnn Craig; uncle, Bud Chrestesen; sons, Dave Speed and wife, Jackie Speed, Kenny Speed and wife, Mae Speed, and Shane Purcell and wife, Kirri Lively; grandchildren, Cadence and Bella Purcell, Aaron Speed and Katie Spoon, Brett and Danielle Speed, Ian Speed, Jacob Speed and Alisa Ligrani; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Shad Purcell; and parents, Clark and Mary Lou Purcell.
A public celebration of life will be held at the Athena High School on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m., with a social hour being held afterwards at the Long Branch Saloon in Weston, Ore.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Camp Ukandu in honor of Vernon and Shad. www.ukandu.org.
