Unity and support will help build a better community
Dear Editor:
Moving to Weiser was an easy choice, but living here isn’t for the faint-hearted. The divisions within Weiser and Washington County create factions, and I sometimes get caught in these divides. It’s disheartening to see people held back by conflicting interests, which hampers community growth. We must foster unity and support each other to build a harmonious environment.
Though I’m not an expert in planning and zoning, I see the need for practical decision-making, which is sometimes lacking. This often leads to blame-shifting instead of addressing real issues. Planning should reflect a vision for community advancement, involving everyone’s needs. Commissioners must engage with the public to build trust and ensure transparency.
Even though these roles are non-partisan, the candidates bring their own beliefs, introducing partisanship. Their campaign promises should be taken seriously, as they often act on them in the office. Residents must stay informed about candidates’ true intentions to ensure they align with community values.
Our community includes both long-standing families and newcomers, each offering valuable perspectives. However, generational families often dominate, sidelining newcomers. This pattern can stifle fresh ideas, so we need to create opportunities for all voices to be heard equally.
Mistakes happen, but unless a decision stems from selfish intent, it’s unfair to damage a decision-maker’s reputation. Officials should uphold high standards, and we shouldn’t face financial harm due to their choices. They should carry liability insurance to protect the community and ensure accountability.
As we move forward, let’s learn from our history and welcome the future.
We should collaborate to safeguard our farmland, uphold property rights, and encourage responsible growth and revitalization.
Respectfully,
Christina Stanley
