WEISER, Idaho – On October 21, 2025, at approximately 2:07 p.m., Weiser Police responded to a helicopter crash in a field adjacent to Weiser Airport (S87), located on Airport Road in Weiser, Idaho.
The aircraft, was an experimental ultralight coaxial helicopter with counter-rotating rotors. According to witness statements and the pilot's account, the two-stroke engine suddenly lost power at an altitude of 100–200 feet shortly after takeoff. The aircraft was flown by a highly experienced pilot holding an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate and multiple commercial ratings, attempted an emergency autorotation but was unable to generate sufficient rotor speed, resulting in a hard landing.
Airport Manager Jim Metzger, who witnessed the incident, reported hearing the engine "cut out" at approximately 2:05 p.m. followed by the impact. He immediately guided first responders to the crash site via the airport taxiway and an adjacent farm field gate.
Upon arrival, Weiser Police and assisting deputies from the Washington County Sheriff's Office ,found the pilot conscious and responsive outside the cockpit. He provided instructions to secure the aircraft, including confirming the master power selector was turned off. Washington County Paramedics treated the pilot on scene for injuries before transporting him to Weiser Memorial Hospital. A fuel leak from the starboard tank was observed and reported to fire personnel; no fire occurred.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was notified via the Boise Flight Standards District Office (Incident Report #33166). The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been informed and has released the aircraft for secure storage at the airport pending a decision on further investigation.
This remains an active investigation coordinated with the FAA and NTSB.
