Solid waste services: Keeping Weiser clean and running

Mayor Herb Haun
If you’ve ever watched a garbage truck make its way through town in the early morning hours, you might notice it has more in common with a farm combine than you’d expect. Both are complex machines with countless moving parts, require constant maintenance, and can be costly to repair. In Weiser, our solid waste service operates with that same level of precision and care.
The City of Weiser currently owns and maintains four garbage trucks. These vehicles are essential to serving our community and keeping them in working condition is a significant responsibility. Our team includes two full-time operators, supported by backup personnel Dave Loos, our building inspector, and Pete Ney from the wastewater plant.
Eugene Cooper and Jerry Worley are primarily responsible for servicing approximately 2,600 homes, along with all of Weiser’s businesses. Their days start early arriving around 4:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. By 5 a.m., they are already out on the streets beginning their routes. By 8 a.m., they are typically heading to the Washington County transfer site with their first loads of the day.
Our goal is to provide reliable service to every resident twice per week, while also meeting the specific needs of local businesses. Under the supervision of Mike Campbell, the team works diligently to maintain nearly 1,000 dumpsters across the city. These include both 300-gallon containers and smaller 96-gallon cans.
After taking a ride along with the crew last week, I gained a new appreciation for the skill and focus required to operate these large trucks – especially while navigating Weiser’s narrow alleys. It’s no small task, and it’s handled with professionalism every day.
We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and highly trained team keeping our community clean.
On behalf of the City of Weiser, thank you for the hard work and commitment you show in taking care of us all.
