Protecting water and power while preparing for future development

As residents of Washington County who live in Weiser, we support the efforts of the Washington County Commissioners, their legal counsel, and the Planning and Zoning Commission in adopting the new ordinance regarding data processing centers.

 This ordinance is the result of many hours of research, discussion, and public input. The commissioners and planning and zoning members worked diligently to create regulations that help protect two of our county’s most valuable resources: our water supply and our electrical infrastructure.

 At the same time, the City of Weiser is working on a mandatory business licensing program. One of the reasons for this effort is to better understand the utility needs of new businesses before they locate here. Knowing a company’s expected power demand allows the city and our utility partners to plan ahead and helps keep electric rates as competitive as possible for residents and existing businesses.

 Idaho Power is already evaluating the need to upgrade the County Road 70 Substation to meet future electrical demand. Large data processing centers can require enormous amounts of electricity, and careful planning is essential to ensure that existing customers are not negatively impacted and that future growth is managed responsibly.

 Responsible economic development means welcoming new businesses while also protecting the infrastructure and natural resources that our communities depend on every day. We believe the county’s new ordinance is a thoughtful step in that direction, balancing opportunities for growth with the responsibility to safeguard the interests of current residents and businesses.
