Looking ahead with care: budgeting for a strong Weiser

By:
Mayor Herb Haun
The finance committee and Weiser City Council are hard at work preparing next year’s budget. The City of Weiser has always taken a conservative approach with your tax dollars. We budget for the worst-case scenario while hoping for the best. As is often the case, reality usually falls somewhere in between.
As we plan for the coming year, we are looking at several important capital improvements, including a new water heater, circulation pump, and diving board for the city swimming pool. We also had to use money that had been set aside for our next garbage truck to cover unexpected repair costs this year. Weiser is one of the few communities that continues to provide twice-a-week residential garbage service, and we remain committed to maintaining that high level of service while being responsible stewards of public funds.
Over the past 10 years, our electric department has absorbed increases in wholesale power costs without passing those costs on to our customers. We are currently conducting a rate study to ensure our rates remain fair and sustainable.
We have delayed this year’s chip seal project, but our street crews will still be busy completing planned street improvements throughout the community. As you drive through construction areas in the comfort of your air-conditioned vehicles, please remember that our employees are working long hours in the summer heat to improve our streets. They are doing their best to complete projects safely and efficiently. A little patience and appreciation go a long way, and I encourage everyone to show our crews the gratitude they deserve for their hard work and dedication.
The City Council would also like to hear your thoughts regarding Fourth of July fireworks. We want everyone to enjoy celebrating our nation’s independence and remember the sacrifices that have secured the freedoms we enjoy today. At the same time, we recognize that public safety and consideration for our neighbors are important. We welcome your feedback as we discuss this issue and consider future policies. I hope you continue to have a fun, enjoyable, and safe summer.
