Have a fun and festival time this Saturday enjoying the many events in Weiser

If you have had the chance to drive down East Main Street past Heritage Park (across from Legends) this week you may have noticed the giant “Frosty the Snowman” greeting everyone. 

 We have Michelle Sterman to thank for this. Frosty could be seen in the backyard of Ms. Sterman’s business from the side door of City Hall. Pat Malay of our street department went over to compliment her on the big snowman and she gave it to him to put in the parks. Thank you Michelle for this generous gift to the people of Weiser.

 This Saturday, Dec. 12, is the car cruise, Christmas lights, Santa in the parking lot, and fireworks display event. 

 Santa will be at the Weiser High School parking lot from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. You will be able to join the cruise on State Street at any time during this time. You can break off at any time to go around town to look at Christmas lights. The Weiser Nazarene Church will also be having their “Live Nativity” scene on Friday and Saturday. All of this will be followed by fireworks in Memorial Park at 8:30 p.m. 

 Here are some logistical things you will want to know about for Saturday night. 

 The cruise is not a parade. If you participate you will need to follow all traffic laws. 

 Santa will be set up on the west end of the high school parking lot to hand out candy into car windows. 

 The suggested traffic flow will be for people to visit the nativity scene, go west from there to the high school, entering on Indianhead Road and exiting on West 7th. Then down West 7th to Pioneer Road and over to State Street to join the cruise, or tour Christmas lights. 

 For the fireworks, you are encouraged to park diagonally around the park in order to accommodate the greatest number of cars. 

 The evening’s events promise to be a fun time for families to get out and enjoy the Christmas season in a safe family environment. 

 I warned Tabitha Leija, the one who came up with the idea, this may be the start of a new tradition in Weiser. 

 If you see Tabitha or any of the others who helped put on this event, please give them a big thank you. 

 People who jump in and make things happen, really make Weiser a special place to live. 

 I also, want to give Weiser Police Chief Carl Smith a thank you for providing logistical ideas to the organizers. 

 In city business this week the crew is continuing to pickup the last of the fall leaves. If the weather holds, they expect to get the last of the leaves this week. They will then start in on the alley clean-ups. 

 Bill Taylor from the water department would like to remind everyone to keep a trickle of water on in your taps to keep water pipes from freezing as we head into winter.

 Also, Police Chief Carl Smith would like to remind everyone who doesn’t have the ability to park in a garage to be sure and scrape your windshield completely when it’s frosty out. Weiser’s finest will be stopping folks for unsafe car windows.

 On the COVID-19 front we continue to see high numbers. At the city we have had a few people out with the disease with some serious sickness going on. Just want to remind everyone that this illness is not like the common cold or flu. It is a crap shoot as to how it affects people. Some people have little to no symptoms. Others are sick and weak for weeks. It is just a roll of the dice. 

 Personally, I lost a family member last week to COVID-19. So…please be cautious out there. Continue to wear masks, distance, and hand wash.
