Fun summer activities at the library and swimming pool

Tonight will be an interesting evening. You see, it is 100 Friends night. Have you heard of the 100 Friends? Well, if you haven’t it is a group of people who get together every three months to listen to the needs of three different local non-profit organizations from the Weiser area. At the end of the presentations, each of the “Friends” vote on who should receive that evening’s donation. The “Friends” have all agreed that the non-profit that receives the most votes will receive a $100 check from each “Friend” with the intent of raising $10,000 for that organization.
The 100 Friends have been meeting quarterly for about a year. It is a great way to raise funds for local charities. If you are interested in becoming a “Friend,” just let me know. You can never have too many friends.
 Well, on to City business.
Hey, I just heard from Timbra Long, Weiser’s librarian extraordinaire. She would like all of you – not just kids – to know about the Summer Reading Program at the Library. The program is open to all ages with weekly prizes and lots of fun all summer long.
There will be reading, of course, but also STEM activities, cooking, computers, and art! Doesn’t that sound great! Sign-ups will be open until June 1. So, get on over to the Library sign up for a great summer!
Speaking of things to do during the hot days of summer, Ken Anderson of the Weiser Recreation Department and Dave Loos of the building department are busy getting the swimming pool ready for your cooling down enjoyment.
The plan is to open the swimming pool on Tuesday, May 27, the day after Memorial Day. The first week’s schedule will be as follows:
 • 7 a.m.  – Adult water aerobics.
 • 8 a.m. – Swim team.
 • 1 p.m.-5 p.m. open swim.
Evenings of May 27 and 28 will be lifeguard training.
 May 29 and 30 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. evening aerobics and lap swimming
The intent is to train the new lifeguards for the first couple of weeks of the season then expand the evening hours based on the number of lifeguards available to provide safety during those hours. So, you will be hearing more from me as the time approaches.
Lastly, I want to let you know that if you see men sticking hoses down manholes in the coming weeks, do not be alarmed. Lonnie Chambers and his crew from the wastewater department will be jetting sewer lines. This is done regularly to prevent build-up in the wastewater lines and to keep everything flowing smoothly. The last thing anyone wants is built up pooh!
Well, that’s it for this week. I hope you take advantage of all that Weiser has to offer in summertime fun!
This really is a great place to live, work, and play!
