Evaluate other options before jumping into a solar power study
Dear Editor:
A recent article explores the potential costs associated with solar energy, suggesting it could help keep rates low as power expenditure increases due to rising consumption. However, it fails to provide a comparison of the projected higher rates for residents versus the investment in a multi-million-dollar solar field.
Currently, Weiser’s electrical rates are below the state average, and even with a potential 25% increase under a higher rate scenario, we would still enjoy some of the lowest rates in the nation.
The mayor mentioned the rise of solar farms across the country. How many of these developments are dependent on government incentives and subsidies that may no longer be available? With the cessation of funding, what consequences might arise? Will we see unfinished solar farms, or will users face higher utility costs to complete these projects?
California is known for its commitment to solar and wind energy yet has some of the highest utility rates in the country. Just because other regions are adopting solar power does not guarantee its effectiveness.
Before committing $150,000 of taxpayer money to a study for a program that has historically struggled to be self-sustaining, we should evaluate alternative conservation options.
