Claude Vest Long
In memory of Claude Vest Long, 93, who passed away Dec. 26, 2023 in Weiser, Idaho.
Claude was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, Feb. 24, 1930.
When he was a youngster his family moved to Portland, Oregon, where he attended grade school and Benson Poly Technical High School, an all boy school. While there he joined a track and field team. He and a neighbor classmate often rode the bus across the city for track meets.
When he was a senior, he moved to Arco, Idaho, played football and graduated from there in 1948.
Right after high school he joined the Navy and served for 5 years as an Air Control Man, first in Pensaecola, Florida and then French Morocco.
In 1955 he met and married Eulene Scott and they moved from Idaho to California. There he became an Ironworker for Local 433 Los Angelos and had a 35 year career.
During that time Claude thoroughly enjoyed scuba diving, motorcycle racing and 5K races.
He and Eulene raised their two sons, Hondo and Slade before they returned to Idaho in 1994, settling in Weiser.
In Idaho, he continued to compete in running. He ran the Race to Robie Creek Half Marathon twice, taking third place in 1998 for his age group (65-70). He also started attending Senior Games in Lewiston and Boise and added the 200, 100, and 50 meter races to his agenda, plus the discus and javelin tosses and the shot put.
Eulene passed away in 2004, just short of their 50th wedding anniversary.
In 2007 Claude married Lane Marie Long who joined him in the Senior Games doing the 5K race walk and the Women’s 200, 100, and 50 meters.
They enjoyed many years of practicing at the high school track and participating in these competitions.
Claude is survived by his wife, Lane; his sons, Hondo (Debbie) Long and Slade Long, as well as his granddaughter Macy (Easton) Powell, grandson Tyler (Kimberly) Long and one great-grandson Jaxon Long.
There will be no funeral per his request
