Signal American finds up and coming writers

This holiday season’s Christmas coloring contest sponsored by the Weiser Signal American uncovered a nice number of young up and coming writers and artists, with two being awarded grand prizes in the contest.
 Elyas Terry, a Park School fifth grader, submitted a report on an active volcano that had erupted outside of Weiser three days earlier, warning area residents to evacuate.
 Terry told the Signal American he’s been fascinated with volcanoes since he first learned about them in kindergarten.

Shirts hopes to raise law enforcement wages

WEISER - John Shirts believes there can be no compromise when it comes to public safety.
 Shirts, a Washington County native who represents District 9, Idaho House Seat A, said boosting wages for the state police will be his key focus when lawmakers convene Jan. 12.
 Shirts said the police agency faces a “great pay disparity.”
 “They’ve had a lot of folks leave to other agencies because their pay has not kept up,” said Shirts.

Washington County seldom sees jury trials

 A defendant in the only criminal jury trial held in Washington County during 2025 was sentenced and then released on Aug. 14, 2025, with a suspended jail sentence and three years of adult probation.
 It was just a year ago Jan. 3 that Vadim Igor Ivko was arrested on felony charges of fleeing or eluding a pursuing police officer. The defendant’s driving privileges were restored this week after a one-year license suspension that was part of his sentencing, but backdated to Jan. 6, 2025.

Hillcrest Cemetery District commissioners to meet Jan. 20

 The Hillcrest Cemetery Maintenance District will have their regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 5 p.m. at the district office located at 215 E. Indianhead Rd. The meeting is open to the public, and the meeting agenda will be posted at the cemetery district office. You are welcome to attend.
