Weiser Girl Scout is selling cookies through April 11
Although Weiser has not had a Girl Scout Troop in over a year, there is still one Weiser Girl Scout and she is working hard to get Weiser our supply of Girl Scout cookies, and there is just a little bit of time left to stock up on Thin Mints, Samoas, or another favorite like the classic shortbread Trefoils or Tagalongs.
Genesis Aburto is currently in her third year of Girl Scouts. She is currently in the junior level and is working towards her cadette level next year. She may currently be the only Girl Scout in Weiser but she’s not letting that slow her down. Aburto is happy to be providing the cookies to the Weiser area to help support the future of the troop.
Last year, with the restrictions due to COVID-19, cookie sales abruptly came to a halt. This year Girl Scouts has gotten creative with the use of online sales through the digital cookies platform. For most of the season, cookies had to be done through this low contact method. Recently however, the organization opened up permission for both sales and extended the sales season to April 11.
Aburto has set a goal of selling 1,000 boxes of cookies this year just shy of her personal record of 1,175, but with only around 600 boxes sold so far, she is hoping to be very busy with this last week of the season.
According to the Girl Scout website, Girls Scouts have been selling cookies and learning entrepreneurial skills for over 100 years. What began as a shared recipe for the classic shortbread has grown into a nationwide yearly tradition. Each $5 box purchased goes directly to the support of the local troop.
Unfortunately, the Weiser Troop has been on hold for a little while due to a lack of available adult leaders. Since Cristina Aburto started the troop three years ago, she has been acting as the troop leader, service unit manager and cookie manager.
Finding volunteers has been difficult. Girl Scouts organization requires two leaders for each troop and those leaders cannot be related. Both leaders must be registered in order to be an official troop. Aburto has been searching for another troop leader so that the troop can recruit more girls.
Aburto is happy to announce that Stacie Sivero has accepted the role as troop leader, so now Weiser officially has a troop ready for new scouts. They will begin recruiting and meeting as a group soon.
Aburto is excited to give Weiser girls the opportunity to be involved with Girl Scouts again. She hopes that parents appreciate the value of the girl led program. Meaning the girls decide as a group what they would like to learn more of so that the leaders can plan engaging activities to help them develop life long skills. Even kindergarteners are taught how to be entrepreneurs and decision makers.
“This program isn’t about badges, it’s about creating lifelong skills and friendships,” Aburto said.
