Nyce to retire from Weiser Fire Department

Long-time Weiser City Fire Chief Kerry Nyce has decided to retire.
After over 12 years at the Department’s helm and over 40 years as a firefighter and paramedic, Nyce is switching gears, intent on reducing the long hours he normally dedicates to his job.
“I’m trying to reduce my stress,” he told the Weiser Signal American. “I’m actually going to go work for the County up in Midvale, at the road and bridge transfer site. All through the summer, I’ve been working anywhere from 207 to 250 hours in two weeks. It’s part of the reason I’m retiring.”
Nyce began his career in Fruitland, signing on as a firefighter in 1980. He also spent over 37 years as a paramedic, serving in that capacity in Weiser and as the fire chief simultaneously.
“With the ambulance, I put in 96 hours per week, on duty and on call,” he said.
Weiser Mayor Randy Hibberd said he will miss Nyce’s services and lauded his efforts to support the community.
“Kerry has done a wonderful job with the fire department. I’ve enjoyed working with him the 18 months that I’ve been here,” he said. “He’s been a pleasure to work with. I’ve seen some of the fires he has been on and it’s been amazing how quickly they’ve been able to put them out.”
Hibberd said the City talked Nyce into pushing his retirement a little further out, to Nov. 5, 2021 to enable administrators to find a replacement.
“It will be a difficult position to fill because it’s only half-time, yet at the same time the person has to be a qualified firefighter, plus a leader.”
