After an exciting win in the first game of 4A State Championship softball, Weiser’s Lady Wolverines were pitted against their own SRV nemesis, Cole Valley, in the second round of play on Friday, coming up short with a 2-7 loss.
The Wolverines managed two runs off of five hits in the outing, scoring one run in the fourth and one more in the top of the seventh.
Cole Valley went 7-7, taking an early lead in the second with five runs, then making two more in the bottom of the fifth.
If there’s anything good to say about losses in tournaments, they do give a team additional time on the field, and a love of playing the game is why they are all there in the first place. The Cole Valley loss gave the Wolverines two more games on Friday.
Weiser 4 - Gooding 2
A late push against the Gooding Senators earned Weiser a 4-2 win. The Senators out hit the Wolverines 12 to 7, but couldn’t capitalize on it against Weiser’s defense.
One wild pitch in the first inning allowed the Senators their first run, and a steal of home in the top of the fifth put them in  a 2-0 lead.
Weiser didn’t score until the bottom of the sixth, but they made the most of it. Shortstop Ali Navarrete scored the first run with a double. Coming to bat right behind her, Natalya Hoobery homered, scoring three, moving Weiser into the 4-2 lead.
With one out, Gooding hit three singles in a row in the top of the seventh, but back-to-back fly outs ended the game.
Weiser 5 -
Timberlake 3
Next up, Weiser faced the Timberlake Tigers for the second time in the tournament, taking a 5-3 win over six and a-half innings.
The Wolverines had five runs on five hits, and Wolverine pitcher Madi Janicek allowed three runs on two hits, striking out seven Lady Tigers.
Weiser held a 4-0 lead until the top of the fourth, when Timberlake came back with three runs. The Wolverines put one more run on the board in the bottom of the fifth, holding onto the lead through the next inning and a-half for the win.
Weiser 1 - Kimberly 8
In a play-in game for a chance at the championship on Saturday morning, Weiser took a second inning 1-0 lead against Kimberly’s Lady Bulldogs, but that’s where Weiser’s scoring ended. Kimberly scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, and five in the bottom half of the fifth, where the game ended.
Congratulations, Lady Wolverines on an outstanding run in the State Championships, and bringing home a third-place 4A trophy!
