Elizabeth 'Betty' Brown Crerar

Elizabeth (“Betty”) Brown Crerar was born in New York City to Scottish immigrants William (“Bill”) and Jean Crerar on Sept. 6, 1938. She joined an older brother and was followed by a younger sister.
Tragedy struck in 1945 when Bill died from a sudden heart attack while swimming at Rockaway Beach with family friend and fellow Scotsman, John Murray. Widowed with three young children, Jean kept her family secure, though Betty never fully recovered from the loss.
Within a few years, Jean married that family friend and the brood soon expanded to five when younger brother John and sister Linda came along.
Staying behind a few months to graduate from high school, Betty followed the family to Springfield, Mo. and then onto Los Angeles in 1958 where she resumed her position as an underwriter with Metropolitan Life Insurance.
Betty dated occasionally in her youth, but never married. Following Trans-America’s acquisition and relocation of the Met Life office in the 1970s, she found an apartment in Santa Ana where she lived alone. After taking early retirement from Trans-America in the 1990s, she bought a small home in Weiser where family, the Community Church, and her cats became the center of her life.
Age and memory loss eventually caught up with Betty who reluctantly agreed to enter assisted living. Her decline continued for over two years until her passing on July 13, 2022.
She was preceded in death by her father, sister June, step-father, mother, and brother Bruce.
She is survived by her brother John Murray and sister Linda Widner of Weiser, a niece Tracy Lewis, nephews David Garrity, Brian Crerar and James Crerar, as well as great-nieces and nephews.
The family extends our appreciation to the staff of The Cottages of Weiser and Horizon Hospice.
A private graveside service will be conducted on Aug. 10 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Weiser.
