Late last week Weiser School District Board of Trustees Chairman Jim Brush released a statement informing the district’s patrons that Superintendent Kenneth Dewlen, who has held the position since late summer 2023, had tendered his resignation effective Jan. 31, 2025.
In his announcement, Brush said the board would immediately begin a search for an interim-superintendent to fill out the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year.
“We will also go through the correct motions of doing a nationwide search for a candidate that fits our culture and maintains the Pride of the Wolverines,” Brush said.
Dewlen’s employment in the Weiser School District began in 2021, when he was hired for the principal’s position at Weiser Middle School, where he served two years. During his time with Weiser’s schools, Dewlen commuted daily from his home in Kuna.
He was hired for the superintendent’s post after Wade Wilson announced his retirement from the district in the spring of 2023. Wilson had taught, coached, and served in administrative positions in the Weiser School District over a 33-year time span.
During Dewlen’s tenure, in the spring of 2024 district patrons approved a $750,000 two-year supplemental levy that included the replacement of Weiser High School’s track facility. Currently in mid-construction, the track’s completion is expected this spring after the weather meets the temperate needs for the new surface to cure without risk of damage.
Along with the new track and field’s approval, new fencing around the entire perimeter of the nine acres was added in 2024, with an end-goal of turning the area into a premier sports complex for the district’s athletes.
After the 2024 Idaho State Legislature passed a school facilities funding measure labeled School Facilities and Tax Relief bill, early last summer Dewlen, WSD’s Deputy Clerk Barbara Choate, and District Maintenance Supervisor Eric Pfeiffer assessed the district’s facility needs in order to submit an application to the state for school modernization funding over a 10-year period.
After a public survey, the facility plans submitted to the state resulted in the district’s qualifying for funding in the state’s first round of approvals, with an expected total to be received in the area of $5.9 million. As of mid-December, the district had received $4.7 million of the long-term funding.
