Wrestlers have good showing at season opener

The Weiser wrestling team competed this last weekend at the Bucks Bags duals at Capital High School in Boise. 

 Weiser had an impressive start to their season, knocking off some 4A and 5A teams including Eagle (45-36), Skyview (51-33), Thunder Ridge (60-28), Bishop Kelly (54-27) and Moscow (64-20).  

 Weiser lost to Rocky Mountain, a 5A school by only a 6 point margin (45-39).  Not bad for a first competitive outing. Weiser had two wrestlers who finished the weekend undefeated: Brody von Brethorst and Conor Marsh. 

 Marsh finished with a 4-0 record at 113 pounds, while Brody von Brethorst finished 6-0 at 152 pounds. Seth Harris, Kooper von Brethorst and Darrian Hoobery also had an outstanding weekend finishing with 5-1 records.  Seth wrestled at 120 pounds, Kooper at 126 pounds and Darrian showed his strength at 220 pounds and at 285 pounds.  

 Since this weekend competition was a dual, Weiser was only allowed to wrestle one wrestler per weight.  Weiser brought multiple wrestlers in a few of the weight classes to give the athletes some more experience and see what they could do.  

 Weiser truly does not have a heavy weight at 285 pounds. These duals showed how competitive Weiser could be by bumping up some of the higher weights and pushing Darrian Hoobery to try his hand at the 285 pounds class.  

 He was extremely successful winning all three of the heavy weight matches that he wrestled, two of which were by pin.

 “I was extremely happy with our showing at Bucks Bags. These young men are versatile and dedicated to the process. We have concentrated on fundamentals these past few weeks and it paid off this weekend with several wins. Now it’s time to get back into the wrestling room and get ready for the next one,” coach Drew Dickerson said. 

 Weiser wrestlers will be headed to La Grande, Ore., Friday, Dec. 7, and Saturday, Dec. 8.

 152 pounds: Brody von Brethorst 6-0.

 160 pounds: Trae Gluch 4-2.

 170 pounds: Malachi Hoobery 1-3; Stetson Beesley 1-1.

 182 pounds: Quinton Schock 2-4.

 195 pounds: Paul Crawford 3-1; Jesse Lockett 1-1.

 220 pounds: Darrian Hoobery 2-1; Jesse Lockett 1-2.

 285 pounds: Darrian Hoobery 3-0; Elijah Carter 2-0.
