Wolverines pummel Pirates on soccer field 8-0

The positive momentum of the Wolverines continued during the last week of triple games for the varsity boys soccer team. Even though the week was full of homecoming activities, the team ended up with two wins and a tie, bringing their conference record up to 7-0-1.
Weiser traveled to Fruitland on Monday to play a makeup game, then played Fruitland at home on Tuesday, and finished the week against Payette with another home game.
Thursday saw the Wolverines dominate the Pirates again, and they ended the game with the same 8-0 score they had from the week before.
Even though the Pirates started the game with possession of the ball, Weiser quickly gained control and started making shots at their goal. Chris Gonzalez was able to get one past the Payette goalie around the 7 minute mark.
The second goal came 11 minutes later when Nathan Turner was able to get control of the ball and push up to the Pirate net and shoot the ball right past the keeper.
There were several close calls, especially off the numerous corner kicks that Weiser took, but Payette’s defense worked hard to keep their net safe. They managed to do so until just 3 minutes before the first half was over. Weiser threw the ball in from out of bounds, Bryce Bake received it, and pushed all the way past Payette’s defenses to score the third goal.
The Wolverines got even more energized during the half-time huddle, and scored in less than a minute from the start of the second half. Turner passed the ball to Gonzalez who was able to score once again, bringing it up to a 4 to nothing lead.
Triston Kautz gained an assist at the 5-minute mark when he passed the ball to Gonzalez and Gonzalez was able to head the ball in right over the Pirate goalie.
Bake repeated his earlier goal when, at 6:15 into the second half, he controlled the ball after a Weiser throw-in and pushed down the field to score again, bringing the total to 6-0.
Edgar Ayala didn’t want to miss out on the fun, and with an assist from Alfonso Hernandez, Ayala scored Weiser’s seventh goal at the 17 minute mark.
Bake racked up his third goal of the game, and the Wolverine’s final goal just 10 minutes before the end of the game. He was assisted by Cris Cornejo. That goal brought the final score to 8-0.
With 3 minutes left in the game, Turner received a yellow card for contact during a slide tackle.
JV coach Zach Rose stepped up and was the varsity coach for this game, since Kathy Bokides was out sick.
“It was a good game. They didn’t have the energy that they needed at the beginning. That’s what we talked about in the huddle,” Rose said. “We talked about what the end goal was, and to play like that, don’t play like our competitors. Play like the team we’ll need to beat.”
While most of the action was at the Payette side of the field, Rose did feel that the Weiser defense did well when the ball came down to them.
“Tristan Padilla played a great game,” Rose said. “He was consistent and worked hard. Moses Hernandez is figuring out stopper and is doing a good job with that.”
The Wolverines battled against the Fruitland Grizzlies on Tuesday, and it was definitely a different game than the day before, and ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Grizzlies observed and learned during Monday’s game, and altered their playing strategies to put a stranglehold on the Wolverine offense.
It looked like play was going to go in Weiser’s favor, when Gonzalez was able to receive an assist from Bake early in the game and score. Just two minutes in and Weiser was ahead 1-0.
After that, the Grizzlies adopted a new defense and any time Weiser had the ball, they would load up the goalie box with players. The Wolverines tried to break through the defenses, but at times there were as many as 9 Grizzlies defending. The amount of bodies was just too much to overcome.
Fruitland evened up the score at 13 minutes in the first half when Brian Ramirez took a shot that slid past Wolverine goalie Gabe Rasmussen.
For the rest of the game, it was just a matter of back and forth play. Weiser took more shots at the Fruitland goal, but they were either blocked by the crush of bodies in the way, or went over and out of bounds.
Weiser defense did a solid job keeping the score at a tie though, and didn’t let any other goals past them during the second half of the game.
“Fruitland was ready for us. They had done their homework,” Bokides said. She felt that once they got their goal, they were going for the tie so they packed their defense in there.
“I’ve been working with our boys so much. They kick so many balls over the goals, so we’ve worked to keep them on the ground, but they couldn’t get them through all those legs.”
Bokides has a plan of attack for the next showing between Fruitland and Weiser, though.
“We have Bryce and Cris who are very tall, and tower over everyone. So we’ll make something happen,” she said.
She also commented on how the other keepers are bobbling the ball, “So we need to follow our shots in.”
Monday’s game was a make-up away game in Fruitland from earlier in the season, when a game was canceled because no referees were available.
Weiser was able to pull out a 4-1 win over the Grizzlies.
Only 3 minutes into play, Fruitland had a foul called on them, and Gonzalez made the kick. The ball bounced off of a defender and Ander Barbot gained control, and sent the ball into the Grizzly net for a quick 1-0 lead.
At the 19 minute mark, Weiser defender Bryan Valdiva had a foul called on him for holding in the Weiser box. Grizzly Lucas Rynearson took the resulting penalty kick and was able to get the ball past Rasmussen to tie the score 1-1.
Weiser quickly bounced back, and two minutes later got their second point after Perez passed the ball to Cornejo, who was able to head it into the back of the net.
Bake brought the Wolverines to a 3-1 lead after he scored at the 26 minute mark.
With just 4 minutes left in the first half, Turner got his foot on the ball and took a long shot that made it to the back of the Grizzly net. The half ended with a score of 4-1, in Weiser’s favor.
The second half had Weiser taking more shots at the Fruitland net, but nothing made it in. Weiser defenses worked hard and kept the Grizzlies shut down the second half also.
Bokides was pleased with the game, “Great team effort. They did really well with their short passes.”
“The shots during the second half were a little wide, but they kept them down. So huge improvement. It’s fun to see them improving,” she said.
