Wolverines game against Filer comes down to a 2-point conversion attempt

Wolverine football traveled last Friday to Filer to face the Wildcats. This game was added due to cancelled games so Weiser was able to get some playing time in.
“We found out about the Filer game with only three days to prepare and they were a much better team than anticipated,” Coach Tom Harrison stated.
Weiser kicked off to Filer to begin the game and Filer monopolized the clock in a possession that lasted until there was just 4:46 left in the first quarter.
Weiser’s defense adjusted to an option style of offense, but in the end Filer scored. Weiser did block the extra point bringing the score to 6-0 in Filer’s favor.
Weiser’s run game came alive with a couple of good runs by Jack Burke and consistent yards gained by Willy Shirts.
Weiser was unable to score, turning the ball over on downs.
With 1:40 left in the first quarter, Filer got the ball back. They would run the ball again scoring with 11:14 left in the second quarter. This time Filer went for a 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 14-0.
Filer kicked off to Nick Swank at the 10 yard line.  Using every player to block, the Wolverines allowed Swank’s speed to do the work, running the ball for a touchdown. Weiser’s extra point was no good and the score was 14-6, Filer.
Weiser’s defense was prepared and forced the Wildcats to punt on a fourth down, taking over with 9:02 left in the second quarter.
Weiser started out running with Burke for a first down, but then they couldn’t quite get it going and ended up turning the ball over to Filer with 7:05 left in the second quarter.
Filer’s possession was short lived, due to great stops by Rylee Willet and the were forced to punt on fourth down.
The Wolverines started with a 20 yard return by Burke, followed by Shirts up the middle for a first down.  Brett Spencer had a quarterback keeper for 8 yards and eventually Burke would run for a 35 yard touchdown.
Weiser went for the 2-point conversion with a nice toss to Beau Shields.
With 2:44 left in the second quarter, the game was tied 14-14. Filer got the ball and was stopped on each down first by Spencer, Shirts, Pope and Shields, then by Jesse Lockett.
On a reverse pass, Brett Spencer intercepted the ball. Spencer then threw to Burke in the end zone in high coverage and Burke came down with the touchdown.  Shirts’ extra point was good and Weiser was up 21-14.
Filer got the ball back with 38 seconds left and promptly returned the ball the length of the field for a touchdown.  The score was tied at halftime 21-21.
Weiser received to start the half and had the ball until 4:28 left in the quarter, but was unable to score.
Filer got the ball back and would score despite a great tackle by Brock Spencer.

Filer gave the ball up on downs and Weiser had another chance.
Weiser mixed up the offense incorporating some short passes and great runs and Spencer was able to run the ball in for a touchdown.  Weiser went for the 2-point conversion, but was unable to convert bringing the score to 28-27 with 2:26 left in the game.
Weiser tried an on-side kick, but Filer retained possession and ran the clock down to 9 seconds before turning the ball over on downs.
Weiser threw the classic “hail Mary” pass that was intercepted as the clock wound down to end the game with a final score of 28-27.
Coach Tom Harrison said, “This was a funny game that forced us to play under pressure. We went for the 2-point conversion and came up short, but fortunately it was a non-league game. The season starts this week with our first conference game against Fruitland, and we will learn from the mistakes in Filer and get better,” Coach Harrison added.
Notable performances were Brett Spencer with 61 passing yards and 59 rushing yards.  Willy Shirts with 69 yards rushing, and Jack Burke with 151 yards rushing.
Weiser will face league rival Fruitland on Friday, Sept. 25 in Fruitland at 7 p.m.
