The Weiser High School cross country teams competed in the SRV cross country championship on Tuesday, Sept. 12 in Parma. The SRV meet is about halfway through the season and gives the runners a good preview of what to expect as they continue to prepare for the District finals in mid-October. Weiser had several runners finish with good times and the boys placed second overall.
In the women’s race, Weiser had three runners place in the top 10. Ella Smith of Fruitland finished first with a time of 21:23.58. Sophomore Claire Matthews took second place with a time of 21:43.23. Kendall Rynearson finished in sixth place with a time of 22:48.52. Freshman Coriana Parsons finished in eighth place with a time of 23:46.32.
Parma took first place overall as a team with a score of 32. With Fruitland and Weiser both scoring 49 for second and third place.
Matthews shared that the SRV meet is favorite because of the local competition.
“We’re both competitors and friends. I’m excited to see what the future meets bring for both Weiser teams,” Matthews said.
In the boys’ varsity race, George Speirs of McCall finished first with a time of 18:40.82. Josh Kelley finished third with a time of 18:47.05. Blake Quinton of Weiser placed ninth with a time of 19:35.68. Judah Parsons finished 13th with a time of 21:00.94. Cale Brassfield finished with a time of 21:53.96. Grant Walker finished with a time of 22:28.98.
Coach Scott Hale shared that SRV gives the team a good idea of where they can focus as they look toward the end of the season. It’s the first time seeing all the competition and lets them know how they compare to other runners in our district.
“Not all teams were at full strength, so to speak, but we still know far more than we did the week before. Both teams are looking good so far,” Hale said.
