Wolverine men win by one with buzzer beater 3-pointer

Coming into Wednesday night’s game, the Weiser Wolverines were ranked third and the Homedale Trojans fourth in the Snake River Valley Conference.
The teams being evenly matched made for an exciting game from the opening minutes until the final seconds. With a nail biter ending, Weiser brought home the win, 47-46.
After a few lead changes in the first quarter, Weiser was able to settle in and secure the lead a little over halfway in. Eli Ruiz delivered the ball in the key to Willy Shirts as he made a quick cut to the basket, Weiser 10, Homedale 8.
For the next 1:30, the Wolverines took control. Ray Calley hit Ruiz on the block for a lay-in where he was fouled. Making the free throw Weiser was up by five.
Ruiz shot, sunk a three from the corner on another assist from Calley.
Needing to make adjustments, the Trojans took a timeout with about two minutes left in the quarter. It was Homedale’s turn to go on a scoring run.
The first quarter ended with Weiser up by two, 16-14.
Ruiz quickly opened the second with another three-pointer on an assist from Sam Kerner.
Less than a minute in, Levi Estes secured a tough offside rebound, putting it back up increasing Weiser’s lead to five.
With 5:34 left in the half, the Trojans tied the game at 21.
Less than 20 seconds later Weiser took the lead back with a three-pointer from Calley.
Halfway into the second, Weiser’s leading scorer, Brett Spencer, was called for his third foul, sending him to the bench. Undaunted the Wolverines continued adding points and played great defense.
Going into the locker room Weiser was up by five, 31-26.
The second half was packed with lots of action and gamesmanship by both teams.
The Trojans opened the third with a deep three-pointer.
A couple of minutes in, Spencer sunk a three as he dribbled off a screen.
The third continued with incredible defense and a battle for rebounds. Neither team was backing down.
Holding onto a three point lead, the Wolverines were up 40-37 at the end of the third quarter.
With less than 15 seconds off the clock in the fourth, Estes sunk a deep two giving Weiser a five point lead.
Both teams played tough defense and neither team was able to score much in the fourth.
With two minutes remaining, Homedale tied the game at 44.
The score remained unchanged until the last five seconds, when Homedale was able to drive into the paint and score, giving the Trojans a two point lead.
The last five seconds of the game stretched into minutes. After a mix-up, Weiser was able to get a timeout granted and time was added.
Homedale only having a couple of fouls in the half, tried to out maneuver the Wolverines. With 3.8 seconds left Weiser had the ball out of bounds on their sideline. Ruiz passed it in and Homedale quickly fouled making it impossible for Weiser to get a shot off.
After trying multiple times to get the ball into play, Weiser had one last chance.
With only 1.1 seconds left, Ruiz delivered an inbounds pass to Spencer near the half court line. Spencer turned in mid-air and got a shot off. The gym seemed to go quiet as the ball soared towards the basket and the buzzer went off. Hitting nothing but net the Wolverines erupted in cheers as Weiser won 47-46.
Weiser scoring: Spencer 12, Ruiz 11, Shirts and Kerner six, Estes four, Calley three, Tyler Pope and Evan Haggerty two, Brayden Walker one.
