Wolverine golf looks to have another great season

Thirteen boys and six girls will compete on the greens for the Wolverines. With those numbers, it will be the first time in a long time Weiser girl’s will not be able to have a JV team.
Coach Jon Lundberg shared that the numbers on the girls side are a little lower this year, having been affected by not having a season last year, but that is fairly typical for girl’s golf, as usually, Weiser is one of the few that has a JV girls’ team.
“We are really excited to have a season. We are going to need to work hard, but it’s going to be exciting,” Lundberg said.
Although his numbers for the girls are lower, he expects to see Gabi Palmer, have a strong senior year, and for JC Yraguen, Ellie Svedin, and Isabelle Rodriguez to help Weiser have a strong girls’ varsity team.
While the team may be young on experience with Palmer and Svedin being the only two with real tournament experience, Lundberg shared that all of the girls are great athletes and are very coachable. They have great potential to be competitive for the district championship.
On the boys side, Lundberg said that Carter Williams will be a rock star on the greens. He has played in a lot of tournaments, and with his experience and skill, Lundberg expects to see him tear it up this year. Devyn Young, Levi Estes, and Rylee Willett are also all strong golfers who Lundberg expects will help Weiser do very well at both the district and state level.
“I think we have great character kids. They have great attitudes, they’re coachable. They are kind to each other and work hard. It’s going to be a very enjoyable year,” Lundberg said.
Lundberg shared that although he feels overall very confident that Weiser will have a strong season, for the first time in a long time, he does not know for sure how they will stack up against the other teams. Mostly because there was no season last year, he is not at all sure where the other teams are, so they are just going to focus on Weiser getting the best it can.
Lundberg shared that he is blessed to work with amazing assistant coaches. Volunteers Larry Lee and Mike Ryan are both former Wolverine golfers themselves and are a great asset to the Wolverine team. Lundberg said that assistant coach Monty Hurd is truly the best of the best. He shared that Hurd teaches the golfers not only how to improve their game but also great life lessons.
“There’s nobody better in the state,” Lunberg said of Hurd.
The Wolverines have a very strong tradition of golf doing very well at the district level. Weiser has won 19 of the last 20 district championships. Lundberg attributes this success for the support that the Wolverine golfers get from the community. He shared that Rolling Hills is an awesome place for kids to play and the golfing community at Rolling Hills has always been incredibly supportive.
“Lots of pieces of the puzzle come together here in Weiser,” Lunberg said.
The kids see the golf course every day as they go to school, and they see the supportive community and the leadership from the other golfers. Especially for the girls, they can start as a freshman, and be competitive by the end of their four years. It’s always a great team to be a part of.
